In the third quarter, safety Rony Pawlik came up with his 14th career interception tying a Rutgers record and giving the Scarlet the ball at the BU 35 and Rutgers drove to 16 before losing the ball on a fumble. In the final period, Rutgers took over on the Boston 19, but it was "no dice" again as another field goal try failed. Rutgers got the ball on the Boston 23 for its next series, but came up empty again, this time being forced to punt on a fourth-and-25 situation from the 38. The Terriers fumbled on their first play after that and Rutgers had possession on the Boston 31 Bue nothing again.

Special to the Daily Record NEW BRUNSWICK The defense did it all for Rutgers here yesterday even scoring the game's only touchdown as the Scarlet Knight edged stubborn Boston University, 6-0. Lifting their record to 6-2-1, the Scarlet posted their second straight shutout while extending their streak of not allowing a TD to 18 consecutive quarters. The Terriers ended their season with a record of 5-4-1, their first winning season in four years. Rutger's offense was ineffective all day against a strong BU defense But it was the Scarlets' brilliant play by their defense, which is currently ranked eighth in the nation, that drew standing ovations from the Rutgers stadium crowd of 13,500 And it was Elvin Washington, a 5-11, 170-pound freshman linebacker, making only his third start of the season, who became the game's only scorer by returning an intercepted pass 42 yards for a TD in the second quarter. "We were in a zone coverage," explained the former Vailsburg high school football star from Newark, and I was just in the right area at the right time.

After I stiff-armed the last guy I suddenly saw nobody else in front of me and that's when I frist started thinking touchdown." While both defenses dominated the game, the Scarlet wasted numerous opportunities. In the first quarter, halfback Bill Bolash ran 44 yards on a reverse to the BU 22, but the Knights iva a III I their own territory most of the day and the Rutgers defense did the rest. Boston managed only six first downs while the Scarlet had a mere five in a struggle of futile offenses. The Terriers were held to 90 yards rushing on 53 attempts and to only 34 yards passing as they completed but two of 20. Rutgers had a skimpy 139 yards rushing and only 23 on passes.

But both times, State's defense held and took the ball on downs. The Bobcats made it to the Penn State eight in the third quarter after recovering a fumble, but a fourth down pass was dropped in the end zone. Eleventh-ranked Penn State then scored twice in the third period to boost its lead to 35-0.
