For example, the restaurant's turnips are a customer favorite. Mary said the only secret is to add sugar and butter to them. Her family often tells customer's how to make a favorite dish, but even that can get tricky because few of the family recipes are actually written down.

"My dad was always a big believer in over-do instead of under-do," Mary said. "In other words, don't under-do the amount of cheese you put in that macaroni and cheese." Welliver's continues to offer smorgasbord style dining, just as they did when they opened. In 1978, the restaurant began offering menu dining, which includes a variety of dinner specials. The steaks, for example, are cut fresh daily and are a customer favorite. The smorgasbord is filled with around 100 items including a salad bar, hot bar, shrimp bar and dessert bar.
