Daily Record, Morris County, Sunday, September 12, 1999 A17 MORRISSUSSEX Towaco train station work to begin By Clementina Pope Daily Record IN REVIEW MONTVILLE Renovation of the Towaco train station is set to begin next month, after the NJ Transit Board of Directors ap- sit Administration. Historic railroad architect F.G. Neiss designed the train station in 1924. The old buildings were demolished in 1970, when Conrail took over and refused to maintain a site often plagued by vandalism. The Towaco station, on NJ Transit's Boonton line, serves 137 daily passengers.

The project is expected to be complete in February. CLEMENTINA POPE can be reached at (973)42a633. 360-square-foot building for bus passengers. Other enhancements include a new 240-square-foot concrete low-level platform, new lighting, historic platform railings, asphalt overlay, curbbrick pavers, mini-high level platform and landscaping. Tiffany-style lights standing 7 to 10 feet high, as well as antique windows and arched doorways, will add to the historical flavor.

Montville Township has contributed $225,000 to the $800,000 project funded by the Federal Tran UPDATE proved a contract this week with M.A. Angeliades of Long Island City, N.Y. The proposed improvements to the 75-year-old station include two shelter buildings, a 600-square-foot structure for rail passengers and a A COMMUTER GUIDE FOUR PLEAD IN DRUG CASE The owner of Sparta lawn mower store and three other men pleaded innocent in federal court Thursday to charges that they were part of a conspiracy to distribute 580 pounds of cocaine worth $6.6 million. Maximo Minaya, 42, of Union City, and the other men were arrested July 13 after U.S. Customs agents followed a truck they said was carrying a shipment of cocaine from a hotel in the Bronx to Mir naya's Route 15 business.

Federal authorities claim in court papers that agents in a helicopter watched Minaya's movements the night of the arrest and videotaped him as he left his store supposedly after realizing he was being watched. The truck driver told authorities Minaya asked him to leave because he had been followed. The truck, still full of cocaine hidden in cartons of mangoes, was stopped by police minutes later, authorities said. Minaya, who faces a minimum 10 years in prison if he is found guilty of the federal charges, has been freed after posting $500,000 bail. He was indicted last week by a grand jury along with three other men, all from New York.

Jose Marte, 30, Jose Mieses. 44, and Cristobal Perez, 27, have remained in jail since they were arrested by federal agents near Minaya's business. Juan Alberto Rodriguez, 25, of Texas, the driver of the truck, also has been in custody since the arrests, but he has not been Route 24 MlllburnSummK Right lane in both directions and westbound shoulder will be closed from JFK Parkway to Route 78 until Sept. 15. Twenty-five municipalities requested almost $13.7 million in funding for 32 projects, compared with 20 towns seeking $9.7 million for 23 projects last year. Members of the open space trust fund committee will visit each site and make grant recommendations, which the freeholder board generally endorses. This year the trust fund holds $11,667,846, about $6 million of which is earmarked for town projects. Decisions on which projects wilj receive funding are expected by OcVJber. MICROSOFT SUES SHOP Microsoft accused PC Ware-houee'in East Hanover of pirating software and is suing the store for unspecified damages.

The" case was one of five filed simultaneously on Wednesday in U.S. District Court four in Newark and one Trenton against NeW Jersey retailers that Microsoft says, continued to sell counterfeit programs after the company asked thorn, to stop. An attorney for Microsoft said the company would be content with a pledge from the retailers to stop selling pirated software. The store at 36 Route 10 is an independently owned franchise of the chain based in Rochelle Park, Bef gen County. It is a small shop that primarily stocks components and sells computers built in the shop.

According to the suit, Microsoft received an anonymous tip the East Hanover store was selling counterfeit copies of Windows 95 and Microsoft Office Pro 97. Two months after sending a letter asking the store to stop selling pirated software Microsoft sent an investigator to buy a computer Microsoft said was loaded with counterfeit software. Microsoft has filed 200 similar cases in the past year. NOW TO AID GIRLS TEAMS The National Organization for Women's Morris County chapter is going to go to bat for the Washington Township girls Softball league, which feels pushed aside by boys teams. NOW wants to know why the township recreation committee has refused to dedicate at least one of its 11 playing diamonds to the 420-member girls softball league comprised of girls between 8 and 14.

While the new Recreation Department Director Rick Blood said three fields were allocated to the girls softball league this summer, softball league President Tom Yanchek said boys teams had priority on those fields and all township fields are dedicated to boys baseball leagues. Yanchek argued there are not enough township fields to go round. He said about 750 boys play baseball on several recreation leagues and in 1998 his league had to cancel more than 40 games because of rain and a shortage of fields. NOW members plan to protest the situation at the recreation committee meeting tomorrow.
