(AP) If MTV, rock star you're as well off in as in this southwestern Indiana city.

In an interview published in the Nov. 23 issue of TV Guide, the singer and actress disparaged Evansville, where she lived for 3 months recently MADONNA MADONNA his office Tuesday. filming a movie about a World War II-era women's baseball league. "I may have as well have been in TV Guide quoted Madonna as saying. The magazine said her chief gripe was that the cable music video network was not available at the house she rented in suburban McCutchanville during the filming of A League of Their Own from August through October.

MTV is a rock star's vital link with what's vogue in the profession, she told TV Guide. "For the first time in my life I felt very disconnected," the magazine quotes her as saying. She said she was forced to watch regular television, something she seldom does. "I'd just turn the TV on and sit catatonically in front of it and like, watch commercials," she told the magazine. Michael MacNeilly, general manager for United Artists Cable in Evansville, said records showed that Madonna's residence was wired to receive MTV and other premium channels at Columbia Pictures' request.

"We provided her with multiple outlets and we provided MTV for Madonna and two other stars," MacNeilly said. He declined to identify the other stars who received MTV. "We gave them all channel cards, too, so they would have known where to find it. Frankly, we're dumbfounded why she'd say that." Turk Walton, the local chamber of commerce president, said he would have been happy to have Madonna watch MTV a at his house, only a short walk from the one she used. "We live on that route and she'd jog by there every day with her bodyguards.

She could have stopped by and watched it with my kids. I'm sure they'd have been delighted to have her over any time." The November sweeps are the most coveted of four periods during which networks program blockbuster shows to help affiliate stations set advertising rates. NBC was the most-watched network last week with a 13.3 average rating, closely followed by ABC with 13.1, according to figures released Tuesday by the A.C. Nielsen Co. CBS, which enjoyed a winning streak during baseball's pennant races and last month's World Series, plummeted to third with 12.3. WOKZ Becomes WERK-FM 'Soft Rock' Out; Newest Format Is 'Oldies 105-FM' By RODNEY RICHEY The Star's Television Editor As predicted, WOKZ-FM changed radically Tuesday.

One of the biggest changes is that there is no more "KZ 105." At 5:51 p.m., Chris Cage, president, American Hometown Radio personally supervised the process as KZ 105 became WERKFM 104.9 "Oldies 105 FM." Cage was at the station on Ind. 3 just south of the Holiday Inn, where a reception for friends and associates of the station was being held. Monday morning, the station launched a publicity stunt of a format, an insistent and annoying "all- Louie" sound that had listeners scratching their heads. (For the past few years, WOKZ had aired a "soft rock" format.) In a lead-off medley to welcome the new, permanent format, the first song played was a snippet of Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley and the Comets. Sat. Nite Oldies the new sound music of the '50s, '60s and '70s went as planned. "Pretty much," he said. "There's always a few bugs with anything new. But it got off as well as could be expected." One of those "bugs" was a 30- second patch of dead air for which Cage took full responsiblity.

The signal also left the air for a few hours earlier in the afternoon, presumably to make the station ready for its satellite-fed format, provided by the Unistar Radio Network in Colorado Springs, Colo. Staffed entirely by Unistar announcers, "Oldies 105 FM" makes room for local inserts of station IDs, news, weather and, of course, commercials. "It is gives us a syndicated music library, top-flight talent and quality control," Cage said of the radio Carmike Cinema 7 3401 W. While news and various special events high school sports, for one will be the only local programming for a while, Cage hastened to assure listeners that local announcers playing morning and afternoon drive-time music would be added later.

"We'll be doing everything possible to keep the presentation local," said Cage, who also owns a radio station in Fort Wayne. "Some people don't understand that when you have a network affiliation, you can use as much or as little as you want. It's just another resource." Cage did report, however, that several phone calls followed the format switch, most of them upset with the absence of Louie Louie. The new call letters, WERK, mirror its sister station, one of Muncie's AM veterans. While the call sign has not been cleared by the Federal Communications Commission, such approval is expected shortly.
