ADDISON HUNT of Winchester received a special letter for her 103rd birthday. The letter to the centenarian, who was also serenaded by members J. of Winchester's high school band, i came from President Owight 0.

Eisenhower. IN A NEW and perhaps slightly unusual promotional campaign, i Muncie's Kroger Stores were giving 12 fur coats valued at a total of $7,200 to customers. I rcit M-1 J-1 N2 1 r. if i i Uk By JOHN CARLSON jcarlsondHiestarpress.com With apologies to Charles Dickens and the characters from A Tale of Two Cities, for a Muncie woman in the 500 block of West 11th Street, it was the best of times, itwastheworstoftimes. Fate had smiled on her when, out of millions of people across the country, she was called by New York City's popular radio show Stop the Music to guess the identity of a tune.

What's more, she even knew the tune, it having recently been made popular by the Arthur Godfrey Show. But when it came time to blurt out the song title it being GilJy, Gilly Ossenfeffer Katzenellen Bogen by the Sea she just couldn't think of it. In hindsight it seems like an understandable memory lapse, but what did it cost her? We don't know, because the brief news item didn't mention it. We are pleased to note, however, that, simply for answering her telephone, the Muncie housewife was the recipient of a darned nice consolation gift a "wardrobe of brassieres." That was, by far, the most entertaining news item of the week, but another interesting one was about the man whose driver's license was suspended for a year for drunken driving. Fines and costs from that charge, plus a couple lesser ones, had totaled a whopping $65.50.

Unfortunately, the man was a little short on cash. Then a cop in City Court offered to buy the defendant's 1941 Ford, which we noted was a clean machine with a new Mercury motor. Figuring he couldn't drive for a year anyway, the defendant PHOTO PROVIDED THOMAS S. NEELY in his diary of 1890 writes of his neighbors' new house: "A peculiar-shaped house. It has a great deal of circular work about it.

It will be very pretty." John W. and Lida A. Ryan had hired Knoxville architect George F. Barber to design their new home at 202 S. Monroe St.

Barber had one of the most successful mail-order businesses in the country. However, the Ryan house was a custom design, not from one of his plan books. This July 1890 photo of the new home shows Lida and John on the front porch. In 1892, John wrote to Barber stating, "The finished structure is as picturesque as anything in the whole region." The house has been undergoing a complete restoration by the East Central Reinvestment Corp. for several years.

Once finished, it will be offered for sale. The house will be part of the home tour during the 28th annual Washington Street Festival on Sept. 18 and 19. Anyone with questions or comments for the 5 iT ry of the week, however, was from Plains, Ga. Seems like President Carter had been out on a pond in a canoe the previous April when he was attacked by a terrorist from the Animal Kingdom.

A mad bunny. At least, it looked mad. as it had made its way through the water toward Carter's canoe. As noted in the story, which was just now coming to light, the president tracked the rapid approach of the "bonzai bunny," then whacked the water with an oar to divert it from its suicidal course. A couple of local stories this week featured government money, the use of which was likely to be lost or delayed.

The county's share of federal revenue sharing funds appeared ready to drop by 62,000 in 1980, while a delay in submitting transit system figures to Washington meant Muncie couldn't touch $645,000 in federal funds to reimburse operating costs for 1978 and 1979. Our favorite government sto- sold his car on the spot, paid his fine and left court one automobile poorer but ahead by $19.50 the money he had left over after paying his fine. In other news a Muncie band, the Collins Band, was on its way to Washington, D.C., to play at the American Legion's national convention. The inde-' pendent hometown band was to visit the White House and do other tourist-type things when it wasn't performing. At a Cowan-area hearing, meanwhile, it seemed most of the folks attending were ready to sign up with a more sophisticated phone system than the one they were using.

Of 68 witnesses, 49 wanted Ma Bell to take over their phone service. Only 19 wished to remain with the Cowan Rural Telephone Company, and several of those folks were shareholders in the company, thus presumably somewhat biased. Among Ma Bell's backers were two physicians who said the Cowan phone system was inadequate for conveying medical information to patients. I Contact John Carlson at 213-5824. Warner Bros.

Still, things were looking up for harried parents out York-town way, where it appeared Junior wasn't going to get any additional vacation days after all. A tentative agreement between the Yorktown Classroom Teachers Association and the Mount Pleasant Township Community School Board meant a teachers' strike had been averted. Because neither side had officially ratified the agreement, details were not released. In other news, Ball State University's Homecoming was set for Oct.

Now the popular comedian, a regular fill-in for the legendary Johnny Carson, would be on-stage at Emens Auditorium with the vocal group the Fifth Dimension. Letterman, 32, was a 1970 telecommunications graduate of BSU. A former weekend weatherman for Channel 13 in Indianapolis, he had written his own biography for his talent agent.

It was used to measure around a wagon wheel before the metal strip was put on, so they would know how long to cut the metal. Even though the specific use for this Whatzit was for a wagon wheel, it could also be used for measuring other objects.

Some mentioned farmland or ground, linear measurements, paper, bolts of fabric, lumber, etc. P.S. We just now received a letter from Rosemary Davis, Muncie, dated June 6 (must have been hold up at the post office). She was entering a guess on the butter paddle we had in.
