BINGHAMTON PRESS March 31, 1952 PARADE OF BUNNIES-To delight the small fry, whip up a batch of Easter bunnies using a package of ready-mix and an Easter cooky cutout. Easter Calls for Bunny Cookies can't have Easter without you bunnies any more than you can have Christmas without a tree. And when the bunnies are really gingerbread cookies, all the more fun for small fry. They're easy to make from a ready-mix. Cut out a cardboard bunny shape that fits right on the dough for easy cutting.

After the cookies are baked, cool thoroughly. Then mark out each ears and fluffy tail with a little white frosting piped through a pastry tube or cornucopia of waxed paper. You can use the gingerbread bunnies for individual favors by propping them against a small paper plate of jelly beans nested In shredded coconut. Carry out the Easter theme by perching one of the bunnies in a crepe paper basket filled with jelly beans. GINGERBREAD COOKIES One package gingerbread mix, cup water.

Blend contents of package with water and mix smooth dough. Roll out thick on lightly-floured board. Place bunny pattern on dough and cut -Readers' Exchange BIRTHDAY PARTY (Question from Mrs. D. Binghamton) I should appreciate any suggestions for entertainment and refreshments for a birthday party for 3 and 4-year-olds.

ORANGE CAKE RECIPE (Thanks to Mrs. M. Binghamton) Mrs. D. Binghamton, asked for an orange cake recipe.

Here is one which is very good and easy to make. Ingredients: cups of brown sugar, cup of shortening, 2 eggs, cup of sour milk or buttermilk, 1 teaspoon of soda, teaspoon of salt, grated rind and juice of 1 orange, 2 cups of flour, raisins and walnut meats as desired. Mix all ingredients in order given and bake in two cake tins. This makes a two-layer cake. Ice with brown sugar icing.

DUTCH OVEN (Question from Mrs. C. Vestal) I should like to know why my cast-iron Dutch oven leaves the taste of iron in my spaghetti sauce. I simmer the sauce 3 hours and when we eat it the taste of iron is very strong. Could it be the acid of the tomatoes that does it? I cook my roasts in the same utensil and we don't taste the Iron at all.

I should appreciate any advice. SOFT COOKY RECIPE (Thanks to Mrs. N. I. Oneonta) Mrs.

D. Binghamton, asked for a soft cooky recipe. Here is one for soft orange cookies. Ingredients: 2 tablespoons of grated orange rind, cup of butter, 1 cup of sugar, 2 beaten eggs, cup of orange juice, 2 cups of sifted flour, 4 teaspoons of baking powder, teaspoon of salt. Cream orange rind, butter and sugar.

Add eggs and orange juice. Beat well. Mix flour, baking powder and salt. Add to first mixture. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto a greased baking, sheet and bake in moderately hot oven (about 375 degrees) for about 10 minutes.

USING DYES (Question from Mrs. R. A. Sherburne) Could someone give advice on this problem? We have a blue fabric-covered baby carriage which is very faded. I have heard that It is possible to renew the color by brushing on a dye solution.

Has anyone tried it? Would it rub off and be harmful to the baby? CURTAIN QUERY (Question from Mrs. N. Unadilla) I need help on curtain Ideas. All the curtains I have seen are either too expensive or complicated for me. Since we are service people I am not interested in permanent curtains.

This house needs color terribly as it is all the same shade of Ivory. The windows are very narrow also and not all curtains look well on them. Surely there is someone with more originality than I who has solved this problem, BEEF STROGANOFF (Thanks to Mrs. R. Berkshire RD 2) Mrs.

R. Binghamton, asked for a beef stroganoff recipe. Here is my recipe. Ingredients: pounds of lean beef, 1 can of mushrooms, tablespoons of beef drippings or butter, pint of sour cream (sweet cream can be used or a cream sauce made from milk), 1 tablespoon of flour, salt and pepper to taste. Cut the beef across the grain so the meat will not be stringy.

Cut into little pieces about 1-inch long and about half the width of pencil wide. Cook meat slowly in frying pan with drippings or butter for 15 minutes, turning meat over occasionally. Add mushrooms cut up or halved. Cook with beef for 10 minutes. Keep just enough dripping mixture in pan to keep ingredients from becoming dry.

Place this mixture in top of double boiler. Then into the frying pan sift flour. If there is not enough fat in pan, add tablespoon to the flour. Add the sour cream. Cream should not be too sour.

Stir with fork to get meat juices mixed with cream mixture. Pour over beef and mushrooms and allow to cook for about 5 minutes. Salt and pepper. Serve with julienne potatoes. More gravy can be made by increasing amounts of sour cream and flour.

ROSE SLIPS (Question from Mrs. A. Oneonta) Perhaps nome reader can help me. How can I grow roots on slips of roses? About four weeks ago I cut slips and put them in Jars of water. The tops are growing nicely but there are no roots as yet.

What can I do? BAKING HINT (Thanks to Mrs. M. West Windsor) Here is a cake-baking hint I would like to pass along to other readers. When Alling baking tins, start by pouring batter around the edges, work toward center. Leave center lower than sides.

This will help prevent cake from falling. Child Behavior Parent Should Remain an Individual Person By FRANCES L. ILG, M. D. and LOUISE BATES AMES, Ph.D.

From Gesell Institute of Child Development MARGARET MEAD'S latest book, "Growth and Culture: IN A Photographic Study Balinese Children," she describes the Balinese method of giving names to people. It is customary to precede the given name with the capital letter I. Thus a' woman might be named I Wadi. She keeps this name till she marries and has children. Then her name changes.

She takes name of her oldest born child, preceded by the word 1 Mem (meaning mother). Thus I Wadi would become Mem Diasih or in other words, Mother of Diasih. The same holds for the father who loses his original name and becomes Nang Diasih, father of Diasih. This may seem rather peculiar to us. Imagine having no name beyond being known as the mother or father of someone.

It may seem peculiar, but stop and think how many of us lose our identity a as individuals after our children are born. It is quite common, in many American homes, for the man to address his wife as 01 imitating the chilren's name her her; and for the woman to address her husband as or "Dad." This is probably not a very dangerous or devastating custom, so long as--in spite of what you are called-you continue to remain an individual in your own right, aside from the fact that you are a mother or father. But how many do. not even do that? How many mothers practically breathe for their children and live their lives out only It in is their not for an American mother to give up her friends, her social or business life, and all interests outside her home, and spend her every waking moment in concern about her children. Such selflessness may be more or less necessary in the very early years when the children are young.

It is probably less necessary, and certainly less desirable as the children grow older. The mother who has not remained person in addition to being a mother finds herself lost and helpless when her children go through the quite cus- tomary teen-age period of rebelling against their parents and of drawing away from them. This type of mother comes to us with tears in her eyes and tells us that her children ignore her, that they no longer confide in in her, that they do not obey her or even seem to respect her. Her hopes are ruined she tells us; her heart is broken, If she had managed to remain a person in addition to being the mother of a family, her independence would have had at least these favorable results: First, she would have had an objectivity of outlook which would enable her to see her children at least in some perspective and would help her to realize this period of rebellion is only temporary. Second, she would have had something left in her life--the children's desertion would not have left her empty-handed.

And, thirdly, had she remained an interesting person in her own right, even her bellious adolescents would recognize this and respond to at least part of the time in the positive way she desires. In future columns we shall discuss some ways in which the woman of the family and the man of the family can continue to function as independent persons as well as parents. Clothes Quiz By BETH BLAIR DEAR MISS BLAIR: I have medium-sized black straw hat, and now that I see hats are often made wonder with if I a can one-sided remake look, mine into an up and downon-the-other. Can this be done at home? Unless you have facilities for reblocking your hat, you are not likely to have much success with the shape. Furthermore odd shapes have to be exceedingly well done or they look very homemade.

If this is your first attempt, you had better try a simple shape. A bit of olive oil can prevent much grief on jam-cooking days. Work a Little At Relaxation By ALICIA HART CITTING on a chair or resting on the couch does not connervetitute For and if your your mind active, you cannot hope to benefit. What you must do is get into the mood for relaxing. Assume your favorite rest position. Tighten your toes by drawing them together.

Next tighten your leg muscles; then the thigh muscles. Pull up on the buttocks; tighten your abdominal muscles; stretch your diaphragm; tense your back and shoulders; lift your chest. Now make fists with your hands; tighten the lower arm and the upper arm. Clench your teeth; squint your eyes. Be sure that you have held each set of muscles as you work upward.

Don't let go! Now slowly start to relax. Release the clenched feet, tightened leg muscles. Continue until every part of your body feels almost liquid. Breathe in deeply two or three times. Repeat the conscious tightening and then the release.

Breathe deeply again. You might even try yawning several times. Stretch, too. You will be amazed at how completely relaxed this short routine will make you feel. It will help to clear your mind because your attention will be directed to your tensing efforts.

Get up, walk around, busy yourself. Whenever you feel tense overwrought by some problem, indulge in this relaxation. And don't overlook it as an aid if you have difficulty going to sleep. Cooked fresh asparagus served on toast with a sharp cheese sauce over top makes a good luncheon entree. Sprinkle it with slivered roasted unblanched almonds to give it good texture and flavor.

DIAL 22-5-22 He OW have many families helped young 000 people get more education Through the use of Life Insurance Thousands of men and women who have contributed to the country's development and progress owe their education to the foresight and sacrifice of their parents. Many parents specifically included "education money" in their life insurance plans. For many other families the life insurance income left by the breadwinner took care of needs at home, freeing sons and daughters to continue on with school.

Then too, many college students used their life insurance policies to protect loans that paid for their expenses. The more education people have, the better it is for the nation. America's 86 million policyholders, through life insurance; are making America a better place to work in and to live in. They are providing for the future of their families and themselves. Their life insurance dollars are invested all over the country.

And their healthy habit of thrift is one of the nation's strongest bulwarks against inflation. Institute of Life Insurance 488 MADISON AVENUE, NEW YORK 22, N. Y..
