Edward V. Broderick, Lonergan's counsel, maintained that he needed the list to determine whether any prospective Jurors had an acquaintance with persons who might testify against the young cafe society figure. The judge conceded that there once was a law requiring names of such witnesses to be furnished in advance, but that it had been re-pealeu and that he had no authority to require the prosecution to produce such a list. Right to Dismissal Mr. Broderick reserved the right to enter a motion for dismissal of the jury if it developed during the trial that a juryman was acquainted with a prosecution witness.

The defense counsel's request came during a stormy session at which he was forbidden to show to any other prospective jurors copv of a letter in which the de fendant offered to waive claims to his slain wife's estate. Judge Freschi said this ruling was prompted by the fact that the letter had been furnished to the press. He declared that when he ruled that the copy could not be read in open court he had in tended that it should not be made public. The jurist said he would permit attorneys to continue to question talesmen to determine whether they had read anything similar to the letter's contents which might prevent them from being im partial. WHITMAN LIVING ROOM IN BASEMENT Our basement has a wooden floor and is kept warm by the furnace which also heats the rest of the Would it be healthy to make a living room in the basement? Or, is it necessary to use insulation? Basements do not make ideal living rooms because of insufficient sunshine and air. If, however, you have in mind a playroom where, an occasional party or "social get-together" is to be held such space can be made comfortable by lining the walls with any of the well-known brands of insulating boards.

I am assum ing the basement is dry all year around. COLD FEET I have a five room house, no basement; cement wall extends down in the ground 42 inches. House is insulated with expanded mica granules. There is 18 inches between dirt and floor. We suffer with cold feet.

Could gypsum plasterboard be used with safety from crumb ling? If not, what can you suggest? Plasterboard will not be suit able. Since you have only 18 inches of space under the house. it will be impossible to crawl under the house to install a blanket insulation between the floor joists. The only other method is to put down a layer of insulat ing board, then put down a wood flooring over it. If you now have a sub-flooring and a finished floor, it would be more practical to take up the finish flooring: put down the insulating board and replace the floor.

(2) Is it necessary to write thank you notes to people who bring wedding gifts with them the day of the wedding?" In answer to (1), the present should be mailed early enough to insure its being received in time. The real disadvantage of taking it with you is that at a wedding reception of any size the bride can't possibly hold up the queue at the reception while she opens presents or even stops to look at those unwrapped for her! If the wedding is so small that there is no receiving line, opening a present or two would be quite all right, and in this case, her verbal thanks might be sufficient, if she has plenty of time to look at it with any appreciation.

Graham Icebox Pudding Busy women who like to entertain friends for dinner occasionally will find desserts which can be prepared the day before the party are real time-savers. This is an unusual icebox cake because it requires none of the pre-war luxury, whipped cream. Roll one-half pound graham crackers fine. Placing the crack ers in a cloth bag, such as sugar sack, prevents scattering of the crumbs while rolling them. Cut one-half pound marshmal-lows into small pieces and roll them in the crumbs.

Cut one-half pound dates and chop onehalf cup nuts fine. Mix with marsh-mallows and cracker crumbs. Add one-half cup coffee cream and mold mixture into a loaf. If mixture seems dry, all a little more cream. Wrap the loaf in waxed paper arid place in icebox for 24 hours before serving.

Yield: Eight servings. Top with lemon sauce, if desired. FLOWER HEADGEAR Huge felt flowers, attached to a comb, are new bits of headgear to arrive in town. Noxon, wealthy cor poration lawyer charged with mur der in the electrocution death of his six-months old defective son, was quoted today as having told investigators that he'd "be damned" if he would have his child In an institution. The case is being tried before Superior Court judge and jury. Miss Mary A Bristol, retired Court stenographer, reading from her notes of police interviews with Mr.

Noxon after the child's death last Sept. 22, quoted Mr. Nixon In a denial that a doctor had termed the child's death an "act of mercy." "I told you twenty times that this was an accident," Mr. Noxon reportedly told the police ques tioners. I couldn't kill my own baby, and that's true," the transciption quoted him as saying.

Mr. Noxen said that he recalled the doctor saying that the child's future was not bright and that this might be the best thing, according to Miss Bristol's notes. Asked if anybody had said, "it may be all for the best," the de fendant was quoted as saying, "I think that Dr.

England (Albert C. England, medical examiner) said something to that effect." Mr. Noxen agreed, according to the noles, that he be damned" if he would have a child of his in an institution. We're all familiar with the part that accessories play in such a scheme, but coats spring surprises this year, and claim a bigger place than was evident earlier. Because they're in colors, because they have so many new ideas in their lines and details, they create clever costumes when teamed with plain skirts or dresses, and with the right accessories. The types are numerous, and it is for you to choose the coat that suits you best. Among the toppers there's considerable variety.

They are not all boicy as you might have expected though most are short, for the fitted topper is news, as is the tunic coat, and the short officer's coat. Then, there are dressmaker coats for wear with your fur scarf, softly styled, collarless and in bright colors instead of the brown or navy you'd have bought last year. The nightshirt influence, me raincoat influence, the workshirt influence, they're all found in spring coats. They re evident in raglan shoulders, in seams as flat as those in a man's shirt, in shoulder yokes, in saddle shoulders, and in the convenient length of many coats, the length that has been found best for a workman's tunic. It has been said that there's a color for every woman, and it seems true, when your eye runs over the coats; in almond green.

or bright green, pimento orange. royal blue, burnt orange, sai-fron, beige, gray, rosy reds, bright red, wine, pale blues, and many others. Then there are coats in white, in black, in navy, brown and in the camel tones. Fabrics are mostly smooth. Gabardine makes officers' coats and toDcoats to go with suits.

Shetlands. monotone tweeds and smoother, softer woolens make the other types. Most of the dressmaker coats are of soft-as-doeskin fabrics. Watch for such interesting details as knitted sleeves, contrasting lapels (black on color) velvet tuxedo in a bright wool coat, and for the very young, buttons in several colors right down the coat, so that the girl who wears it can match accessories to any button. Braid, stitching or trapunto embroidery is found on coats for women, though they are gay too, because of their colors.

When they're short, they are nearly always teamed with skirt or dress in contrast for one of those stunning planned-ensemble effects, with accessories carried out to complete the scheme. Select the type coat that will serve you best, and the color that will do the most for the clothes you have. You'll be surprised how much extra interest it will add to your wardrobe. He was 20 pounds underweight. He was in the first stages of tuberculosis of the lungs. He had enough trouble to do for a life-time but until his queer behavior made his family uncomfortable, they did not give him a second thought.

He was supposed to grow up and when he didn't do that quietly, it surprised his people into seeing tney weren't getting on with him. Y. New Hairnets Are Colorful By ALICIA HART IN YOUR color-scheming for spring a season when the bolder it is the better consider a hairnet in a vivid shade that flags eyes to your head. Tipping you off as to what top-ranking fashion models are doing with nets that keep hair tidy and add excitement to a coif. Ruth Woods, one of Robert Powers' beauties, says: "We like to cradle our long bobs or confine our updo's in big ropey nets of vivid color." To name a few hair style tricks that you might like to try out in front of your own mirror, Ruth suggests using a bright red or tiger lily pink net as accent color for a somber navy blue or black costume. To increase pulling powers of colors like these, match your hairnet exactly to the shade of lipstick that you wear.

Or repeat the color that swathes your head with a red or pink jewel clipped to your dress. To make a smoothly netted little head more festive, stick a flower in your hair, or top your net with a gay hat. There are endless ways to wear these colored nets, designed by costume milliner Lily Dache.
