Scott. He plays a composer bereaved by accidental deaths of his wife and daughter. He ((logically rents an abandoned mansion that resembles a demented Buckingham Palace. Things go bump in the night, after math of a long-ago murder. Scott lends credibility to the far-fetched happenings, and director Peter Medak manipulates the standard scare tactics with skill.

Trish Van Devere is helpful in Scott's struggle against terror, though she is burdened with some laughable lines. Melvyn Douglas contributes another of his strong performances in the title role.
