Thursday, April 27, 2000 Press Sun-Bulletin 7 Mill's 'Planet' BY GENE GREY Staff Writer A play about friendship in a time of crisis, Lonely Planet by Steven Deitz opens today for a two-weekend run at Endicott's Cider Mill Playhouse. The twocharacter directed by Brendan Curtin and featuring David Mitnowsky and Doug Hall, is the third and final production in the Mill's first alternative season. The alternative season features shows that are a little riskier and edgier than the Mill's regular plays and, like Lonely Planet, have both adult content and language. Curtin, Mitnowsky and Hall were all drawn to the play about a year ago when they were looking for plays for the alternative season. Having had successful runs in Seattle, where it originated, and at New York's Circlein-the-Square off-Broadway theater, Lonely Planet is a contemporary play, which the trio believes treats a serious subject with humor and without polemics.

weekdays serious, but it isn't maudlin or 'woe is me' like a bad production of The Three Sisters," said Hall, an actor better known at both the Mill and Binghamton University as a skilled director. The play marks his first Mill appearance as a performer. "It doesn't hit anyone over the head with a political message," said Curtin, a regular Mill actor who has been branching out as a director. "It's about how two friends deal, in very different ways, with a crisis that affects them and their community." said Mitnowsky, last seen in the Mill's production of Fiddler on the Roof. Woods.

There will be food, live entertainment, student group booths, vendors, a street cafe and games. Following the day street carnival, there will be a free concert at 8 p.m. in front of the student union featuring They Might Be Giants. THE Lour Guide Pheasant 11928 Farm 13,000 SQ. FT.

The three have been deeply involved in the show, a collaborative effort, over the past four weeks with rehearsals in both New York (where Hall and Mitnowsky reside within four blocks of each other but hadn't previously met) and in Endicott. "We found both roles so good that for a while neither of us knew which one we would ultimately play," Hall said.

"The way it is written, Deitz leaves so much to the imagination, both for the actors and the "Everything isn't spelled out, so we have to tell the story, make it clear, but let the imagination work as well," Curtin said. Weekend honors Vietnam vets The 25th anniversary of the last combat death in Vietnam will be commemorated this weekend with "Remembrance and Reunion," a program hosted by the Organization of Vietnam Veterans. At 5 p.m. Friday, there will be an open house at VFW Post 1449 on Nanticoke Avenue, Endicott, followed by a 7 p.m. memorial service at the war memorial on Main Street, Endicott.

The night concludes with a 12-hour honor guard vigil at the memorial beginning at 8 p.m. There will be a pancake breakfast from 6 to 8 a.m. Saturday at VFW Post 1449, followed by a 10 a.m. parade from Dickson Street to Grippen Park, where there will be a number of activities including a memorial service, military equipment displays, a veterans' services information booth and a balloon release honoring MIAs. The event will conclude with a dance from 5 to 11 p.m.
