The crowd filled every nook and corner of-the enclosure, standing 10 deep the rear of the grandstands, spreading completely around the playing field and even decorating the fences with rooters' who had a tough time preserving their dizzy positions during the exciting The game was halted on several occasions when the crowd broke loose from Its moorings and Invaded tho playing area. May 14 Walter Higgins, Columbia distance-running star, has his work cut out for him at the coming Intercollegiate A. A. A. A. games, and he knows It.

Walt la the proud possessor of the two-mile championship crown by virtue of his fine feat of out-gaming and out-sprinting Ray Buker, the former Bates College star, on the Harvard Stadium cinders last May. The Columbia distance ace wants, above all things athletic, to hang on to his title, but he's got to do some smart running to" do it. The runner whose shadow lies athwart the path of young Higgins is Elmer McLane, the slender Utahan, who wears the colors of the University of Pennsylvania. The Mo-Lane boy has developed Into a whale of a two-mller under the watchful eye of Lawson Robertson, and threatens to make off with the title that Higgins grabbed In that hectic Cambridge race last spring. McLane, who is a capital' front runner, will go all the way.

He knows full well that this is the only way that he can beat Higgins. By the same token the Blue and White's star's only chance to retain his championship is to stick to McLane like a burr and "give It to him," as only Higgins can, in the last "220." Higgins has been run ning miles and half miles ever since he started active training for the "intercollegiates." The only two-mile race that he has touched was the so-called international contest at that distance' at the Penn Relays. This one proved a veritable cinch for Walt because his rivals did not know enough, or did not have enough, to run some of the speed out of his legs in the first mile. Any runner who lets Higgins go as slow as 4.60 for the- first mile of a two-milo race Is with death. Ask Jimmy Connolly of Georgetown.

He knows. Jimmy fell a victim to Higgins' sprinting ability in the special mile at the Western Union games after suffering the pace to go as slow at 2.1 for the first half. The reason that Higgins Is running the shorter distances this spring is perfectly obvious. By running halves and miles In fast company the Columbia boy Is preparing himself to stay with early pace In the intercolleglaU two-mile event even If Elmer elects to go as fast as 4 minutes and 30 seconds. McLane Is no sprinter.

Higgins has only to be with him at the start of the last eighth, have a little up his sleeve, to beat the Pennsylvanian to the tape even aa he did Ray Buker, one of the fastest finishers In the distance ranks in the Harvard Stadium last May. 1U" 1111. 1 1 plans for the season will bo miii Won. The champions kept 30,000 fans busy and spell bound doing that. They met their supposedly strongest rival, the Pirates, for the first and outstayed and outplayed them. It was a touch of high life the Giants gave the Plttsburghers and the 30,000 fans, baseball of a speed and calibre the Corsair falks couldn't follow and which made the fans howl In appreciation. AIcGraws men shut out the Plttsburghers, 9 to 0. Two hits were made off McQuillan, 12 off the combined Pittsburgh pitchers, of whom Wilbur Cooper was the first choice.

Kight there lies In part tho explanation of the one-sldedness of the game, but there was more to It than that. Each team went at the other fast and with determination, and a spirited, relentless battlo took place, but In matching pace with pace the Ulunts tuned the machine up to a pace the Pirates couldn't hold. Half way through the game the later dropped out of It, not giving up, but far back In spite of good moralo, which alone was not sufficient to keep them in tho game with the superior fielding, hitting and pitching of the Giants. The world's champion label was oi-cr everything the Giants did. The whole shebang was vibrant.

McQuillan had It all from slow ball to smoke, and one hit was made off him In the third inning and one In the fifth. The rest were blanks, and his first inning was his hardest. The Pirates crumbled, though in the first part of the game they did brilliant fielding of their own. Their spirits didn't falter, but their fielding did, and they never could touch McQuillan. The Giants hit Cooper rapaciously, with Cunningham and Frlsch leading, and Bancroft and Frlsch whirling around dizzily with their fast plays.

Traynor and T'erney, who started the et-'em-alive business, were setting a breathless paco for our boys, and of necessity and for the honor of dear old Gotham the latter had to uncover all tholr peppery tricks of feet and hand to keep alongside.
