The Star Press Tuesday, March 17, 1998 Pago 3D Msh or not, count your blessings this St. Patrick's Day Our Neighborhood r8 'rfimiK ii itiniiVhiiiiiw i Esther TOWNS On March 17 even those with no Irish blood forget that fact and assume Irish ancestry for that one day. St. Patrick's Day has become a day for parades, for wearing green clothing, for drinking green beer and for wearing shamrocks and green-tinted carnations. Some over-enthusiastic cities have even dyed rivers green.

The traditional meal for the day must Include corned beef and cabbage. As with many historic figures, Patrick's life is full of ironies. Inaccuracies and guesses. No one is sure where he was born Scotland, England, Wales or France but he definitely was not born in Ireland. His given name was Maewyn; he was later given the name Patrick.

One source claims that he was bom on March 8 or 9, and since church officials did not know which date was right they added the numbers and decided to celebrate on March 17. Another claims that the celebration occurs Celebration of St. Patrick's Day started in the mid-1840s. In Ireland the day is spent at mass in the morning, visiting friends in the afternoon and singing and dancing in the evening. Possibly most of the people celebrating the day in the United States actually do have some Irish blood.

One source insists that there are more Irish descendants living in the United States than there are people in Ireland. We commonly speak of the luck of the Irish, and one anonymous writer said, "If you're lucky enough to be Irish, you're lucky enough." One of the ways that I have chosen to celebrate the day is to amass as many of the delightful Irish toasts, blessings and curses as I could find, and I will share my favorites. I found Just two curses: "May those that love us, love us; and those that don't love us, may God turn their hearts; if He doesn't turn their hearts, may He turn their ankles so we'll know them by their limping." "May the enemies of Ireland never eat bread nor drink whiskey, but be tormented with itching without benefit of scratching." The remainder are blessings, prayers and toasts. "May God grant you always A sunbeam to warm moonbeam to charm sheltering angel So nothing can harm you. "May you have food and raiment, a soft pillow for your head.

May you be 40 years in Heaven, before the DevU knows you're dead." "May the Good Lord take a liking to you but not too soon." "May you have the hindsight to know where you have been, the foresight to know where you are going, and the insight to know when you have gone too far." "May; your blessings outnumberThe shamrocks that growAnd may trouble avoid youWherever you go." "May your troubles be lessAnd and miles of Irish smiles for golden happy hours Shamrocks at your doorway for luck and laughter too.And a host of friends that never ends each day your whole life through." "May the hinges of our friendship never grow rusty." "May the luck of the IrishLead to happiest heights And the highway you travel Be lined with green lights." "May God grant you many years to liveFor sure He must be knowingThe earth has angels all too few And Heaven is overflowing." "Bless your little Irish heart And every other Irish part," This last one is widely known and well loved. "May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back.May the sun shine warm upon your face.May the rain fall soft upon your until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand." your blessings be moreand nothing but happinessCome through your door." "May you always have these blessings A soft breeze when summer comes A warm fireside in winter And always the warm, soft smile of a friend." "Grant me a sense of humor, Lord, The saving grace to see a joke, To win some happiness from life, And pass it on to other folk." "May your pockets be heavy Your heart be light And may good luck pursue youEach morning and night." "May there always be work for your hands to do May your purse always hold a coin or two May the sun always shine on your windowpaneMay a rainbow be certain to follow each rain May the hand of a friend always be near youMay God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you." "Wishing you a rainbow for sunlight after showers Miles on the anniversary of his death. Even the year of his birth must be estimated about 385 A.D. He died in 461 A.D.

Credit is given to Patrick for converting much of Ireland to Christianity. He reportedly explained the idea of the Trinity through the use of the shamrock. He also is supposed to have driven all of the snakes out of Ireland. 0 30 FI; To place a classified ad call: 747-5777 Outside the 765 area 1-800-883-0730 Fax 765-747-5782 E-mail clsadthestarpress.com Hours: Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. TheStarPtess REAL ESTATE 502 Room and Board 550 Mortgage Loans 554 Business Opportunities 558 LandCommercial 562 Investments 506 Rooms for Rent 510 Rent Sharing 512 Furnished Apartments FARM 405 FruitsProduce 415 SeedFeedGrain 425 PlantsShrubbery 435 Farmers Column 445 Tractors 455 Poultry Supplies 465 HorsesLivestock 514 Unfurnished Apatments 570 MobileModular Homes ANNOUNCEMENTS 105 Auctions 115 Card of Thanks 120 Memoriams 125 Cemetery Lots 130 Lost and Found 135 Special Notices 140 Special Greetings 145 Money to Loan 150 TravelTours 155 Personals 160 Adoption 518 Mobile Homes 574 Houses for Sale I- EMPLOYMENT 205 ChildElderly Cars 210 Housekeeping 2150fficeClencal 220 Insurance 225 General 230 Finance 235 Professional 240 Medical 245 Restaurants 250 Management 255 Sales 260 Skilled 265 Drivers MERCHANDISE 305 Musical 310 HuntingFishing 31 5 Wanted to Buy 320 Building Materials 325 CoalWoodFuel 330 Household 335 Collectibles 340 Home Electronics 350 Miscellaneous 355 CoinsHobbies 360 ClothingJewelry 363 Bazaars 365 Rummage Sales PLAN EASY PAYMENT PROGRAM You may now pay for your advertising using Checks By Phone or one of the following credit cards: 578 Lots 582 FarmsAcreage 586 Resort Homes 590 Out of State 594 Real Estate Wanted 522 Houses for Rent 526 BusinessOffices 530 Garages for Rent 534 Farm Land 536 Wanted to Rent 542 WarehouseOffice 546 Vacation Classified ads are now on-line at thestarpress.com E-mail clsadthestarpress.com it Places 370 Pets 375 Lawn Garden 270 Trainees 275 Educational 280 Situations Wanted 380 MachineryTools 385 SportsExercise TRANSPORTATION BARGAIN BASEMENT 4lines4days8 Items under $250 Non-Commercial SUPER SAVER Items up to $1,000 Non-Commercial Please Note: Check your ad the first day It appears.
