2-B PRESS, Binghamton, N. Y. April 21, 1970 Hollywood Closeup Rafer Turns Talent To Olympics Plan By MARILYN BECK Rafer Johnson has packed away his passport for awhile. The Olympic decathlon champ-turned actor, who's spent most of the last year in Europe on "Games" and "The Last Grenade" location, will be spending the next few months supervising plans 1 for the Western Special Olympics for Retarded Children here in the United States. Rafer's been on the board MARILYN of directors of the Joseph P.

Kennedy Foundation since the BECK Western Olympics, which it sponsors, were organized two years ago. Besides organizing the meets, he's managed to help train some of the youngsters for the events. This year he plans to be on board for the local meet in Long Beach in June, at least half the state 1 meets taking place around the country, and at the national championships in Chicago in August. I got the feeling when we chatted that Rafer was upset over the weak, weak reviews of "Games" mainly because they might influence the turnout at the film's premiere scheduled for this evening in Costa Mesa, Cal. Proceeds are earmarked for the Western Special Olympics.

DEFENDING RYAN "Games," which-justifiably, viewers' pans, Rafer said, "Part been working with a director who O'NEAL'S PERFORMANCE in I felt-drew the brunt of reof Ryan's trouble could have keeps pressuring you. "Michael Winner is primarily a documentary director, which didn't bother me because I've had experience in that field before. Evidently Ryan hasn't. It's hard handing in a good dramatic performance if someone's always after you until you're uptight. I got along with Winner fine, though." Here's a switch.

Leslie Briccusse says that Cinema Center is so happy with the way "Scrooge" is turning out, they've asked if he'd like more money to spend on it. He says he turned it down because he believes musicals can be brought i in for a reasonable cost. We'll see. This is Leslie's first time around as an executive producer. You're probably most familiar with his name as composer of the "Dr.

Doolittle" and "Mr. Chips" scores. Kheel Is Pessimistic On Newspaper Talks NEW YORK (AP) Mediator Theodore W. Kheel remained pessimistic Monday as management of the city's four major, daily negotiations newspapers with re- 10 newspaper unions. "The situation is very critical and becomes more critical each day as pressures continue to mount in the composing room of the New York Times," Kheel said.

The talks resumed after a weekend recess which Kheel said he called to give the parties a chance to reflect on the gravity of the situations. He predicted that any newspaper shutdown would be a long one, pointing to the 145- day negotiations during the 1965 newspaper strike. The printers, who have been holding meetings during approximately 13. of every 24 working hours at the Times, had threatened to extend their work stoppages today beginning at 12:01 a.m. However, as the deadline came and passed there was no immediate indication that the union meetings had, in fact, been lengthened.

The unions, whose 13,000 members have been working without a contract since March 30, have a rejected a management proposal for pay increases totaling 24.79 per cent over three ears. The members of the nine craft unions receive from $150 to $202 a week. New York Newspaper Guild members receive somewhat higher pay which varies according to newspaper. Besides the Times, papers in the negotiations are the Daily News, the New York Post and the Long Island Press. Movie Timetable AIRPORT of a Bad Girl at 7:15.

Drug Use in Plants Reports Worry Top Officials of UAW Top officials of the United Auto Workers union are quietly. widespread worried and over increasing reports use of of narcotics by workers at auto plants and other factories around the nation. "Our shop stewards are finding the evidence in restrooms-the sweet smell of marijuana, needles and other paraphernalia for drug injections, guys with needle marks on their arms who become ill the job," said Douglas A. Fraser, an international executive board member of the union and head of its Chrysler Department in Detroit.

"It's both marijuana and hard drugs," Paul Schrade, executive board member from Los Angeles, said of the increasing evidence reported by local union officials. They spoke in separate interviews. Some other high officials of the union were reluctant to talk about the problem. Drug use has risen sharply in the last three years and "it will probably get more serious as time goes on," said Fraser. Most of it occurs on ond shift, usually 3:30 p.m.

to midnight, he added. One major worry is the safety jured of on workers the who job could while be intoxicated with drugs, Fraser said. There are no figures on such cases or on how widespread drug use is among workers, but the union is receiving increasing numbers of ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) from both management and its own shop, stewards, he said. Schrade said the problem is compounded in some plants where company nurses give depressants or pep pills to workers on the assembly line who complain of nervousness or fatigue.

It would be better to send such workers home on sick leave, he said. The largest number of reports of drug use on the job are coming from plants in California and Detroit, but "if it's happening there, you can also assume it's happening in Cleveland, Syracuse and other parts of the country," Fraser said. In some plants, union officials are reluctant to report drug use for fear of getting their members in trouble, Schrade said. "We have made it clear that if there is any organized doing the pushing -and suppose there are -we certainly wouldn't defend people like that," Fraser said. "We really don't know what we can do except to give strong advice that they stop doing it," he said of drug Lights Aid Safety? Bloomington, Ind.
