Sherman Arp, colored, a ho is confined in a lonely, solitary cell in the county jail, this place was paid a visit by a reporter yesterday. Sherman said that he had nothing new to tell the public, but that within a few days he- onld give something for publication. His wifo, nor any of bis relatives had paid him a visit since the affirm-atibfr snd resentence of his case by the Supreme Court- He gratefully accepted the reporter's offer of some cheroots and iiisairated newspapers. -He had not experienced any suffering, physically, other than that of frost-bitten hands and feet (He was lying closely covered upon his couch all the while.) The coop's inmates complain very much of frost-bitten hands and feet No fire in the heaters are allowed, because of the fear of tbe coop's destruction by flames. This, is as bad as it can well be unfortunate human beings suffering within the con fines of a county chicken coop Let this matter be looked after at once by onr Commissioners. HBBBEBT GETS IT. New York, Feb. 6. The Herald's Washington correspondent says It is practically settled in the minds of nearly everybody around the Navy Department that Representative Hilary A. Herbert, of.

Alabama, is to be the next the Navy. I am assured by a high official that Mr. Cleveland has. acquainted Mr. Herbert with his desire to have him take the Navy portfolio.

It is believed there is little room for dcubt that he will accept. It is also stated that he will accept. John L. Burnett passed through from Rome, this week, en route to his home in Centre. W.

W. Brandon visited Rome this week. Several, of the boys of Cedar Bluff were out on a fox bunt this week. G. L.

Hardwick visited Collins- ville last week, accompanied by his son, Watt Watt will enter school at that place. Zack Laney has been very sick, but is able to be on the streets again. Dr. Leath, of Exie, is visiting our townsman, N. B.

Mr. Bed. Barron, our meat market man returned Wednesday from a trip to Cave Springs, where he has been visiting relatives and mends. The steamers in coming and go ing from Rome to Gadsden make it convenient to arrive at Centre, in the night. Such has been the case for a number of years.

Just as soon the season opens up businesss.in the line of farming and gardening proposes to start and finish with a rush. Everybody is ready, willing and waiting. We are glad to see our friend, Dr. Jas. L.

Burnett will shortly leave us to accept residence at Gadsden We are very sorry indeed to loose such valuable citize ns as the family of Mr. Burnett but we are assured that he will spend a handsome por tion of his time with ns, before and during term of our County and Circuit Courts. Gadsden will have made' a valuable acquiescence in securing this astute attorney to citizenship.
