Ole Miss, with plenty of talent at center, quarterback and fullback, is strong down the middle. But 16 departod lettermen left some sizeable cavities to be filled in the line and at halfback. Among the men most likely to bo missed are All-America tackle Rex Reed Boggan, halfbacks Jimmy Patton and Allen Muir-head and three guard regulars, Ray James, Rodgers Brashier and Archie Shepherd.

Coach Johnny Vaught has three boys he considers candidates for All-America honors halfback Billy Kinard, guard Buddy Alliston and center Gene Dubuisson. Kinard is the No. 1 ritrht half a spot he shared last vear with Muirhead, the Rebs' top scorer and ground gainer. Sound defensively, a good blocker and fine pass receiver, he packs the power of a fullback and the speed of an antelope in his 190- pound frame. Johnny Barber, "who is even faster, will be his relief if ho gets a medical okay on a leg injury.

Alliston is the only thing that Keeps Vaught Irom weeping over the guard situation, which sorely needs experienced person nel, a zuu-pounded, quick and mmDie, Ainston nas no peer among the Rebs when it comes to blocking. Dubuisson, at 6-2 and 202, has the. toughness, mobility and een- eral kpow-how to make him a standout at center. With Jerry Stone, who is even bigger, backing up Dubuissonu, Vaught has no worries' at the pivot post. Biggest surprise is at quarterback, where Johnny Blalack No.

3 last year, has shoved ahead of Eagle Day and Houston Pat-ton, who shared starting duty last fall. Blalack, 5-11 and 168, is an accurate passer and has the running ability needed to make the split-T work properly, an element missing in the Rebel attack since 1952 and Jimmy Lear. Paige Cothren, a powerful runner, and fine has the fullback post will manned despite the loss of co-starter Bobby (Slick) McCool. Jerry Baker shows the promise that could give the Rebs a better fullback punch than last year. Both are juniors and scale slightly under 200.

Earl Blair and Eddie Crawford are top drawer candidates at the left half across from Kinard. Both are capable but have to go some to improve on the 7.1 average the departed Jimmy Patton compiled last season. He is expected to be okay after his leg operation. Crawford, another swifty has come along nicely. With veterans Dick Weiss, Billy Yelverton and Dick Goehe 'available, tackle play could be above average if reserves come through.

If the Chicago White Sox could manhandle the pesky iBaltimore Orioles like the other three flag contenders, they might be leading the loon by four or five games. As it is, Chicago was knocked out of first place yesterday when they splvt a double-header with the Orioles' for the second day in a row. Back into the No. 1 spot went the New York Yankees after Yogi Berra and Mickey Mantle socked back-to-back homers in the ninth inning to defeat the Detroit Tigers 3-2. Chicago bats rang for 20 hits in the opener as Baltimore was submerged (14-1), but the Orioles snapped back to grab the nightcap 2-1.

The Cleveland Indians evened their two-game series with the Boston Red; Sox, winning 2-0, while Kansas City swept its two-game set with Washington by winning 5-04 1 In the National League, Brooklyn widened its first-place gap over the Milwaukee Braves to 12 games in a home run display that sank the Chicago Cubs for the second straight day 9-5. The New York Giants evened their two-game series by downing the St. Louis Cardinals 4-1, and the Pittsburgh Pirates made it two straight over the Cincinna ti Redlegs 4-2. Milwaukee and Philadelphia were idle. True, the four-game split with Baltimore left Chicago only half a game out of first place, but those are contests gone into the record book.

Had the White Sox swept the series, as Manager Marly Marion had hoped, Chicago would be ruling the roost today by lVa games. In 20 meetings with Baltimore, the Yankees have won 18 games from the cellar-dwelling Birds. On the other hand, Chicago has won only 10 of 18 games with Baltimore. Cleveland, in third place a game behind the Yankees, has done almost as well, winning 15 of 18 from the Orioles. The fourth-place Boston Red Sox, 4 games behind New York, are 11-5 With Baltimore.

In the opener yesterday, Southpaw Billy Pierce, coasted in, copping his fourth in a row and 1 1th of the year. Dave iPhilley's eighth homerv was the lone Baltimore tally. But Bill Wight scattered nine Chicago hits in the nightcap, and Chicago's sole run came on-Sherm Lollar's homer in the ninth, his 15th. Al Smith slapped his 18th hom er in the first inning to get Cleveland away fast against Boston and Frank Sullivan. Bob Avila led off the sixth with his 10th" home run.

Mike Garcia: held Boston to seven hits, blanking Ted Williams. Steve Gromek looked like a winner for Detroit as he limited the Yankees to one hit in seven innings. Al Kaline had blasted a two-run Detroit homer in the first inning of Whitey Ford. But the Yanks, beaten Tuesday by Detroit, got one run back in the engHth on three eingljes.
