INDIANAPOLIS (AP) The Indiana Pacers' season is down to two crucial games, and their chances of making the NBA playoffs for the second year in a row likely won't be decided until Saturday night in the final game against the New York Knicks. If the Pacers win, they're in; if they lose, they're out. It's that simple.

"It doesn't guarantee us any: thing, Coach but Jack it helps our situation," Ramsay said of Wednesday night's victory at Atlanta, a 116-98 victory that lifted the Pacers into a three-way tie with the Knicks and the Washington Bullets for the final two Eastern Conference playoff positions. Washington's loss Thursday dropped the Bullets a half-game behind the two others. Indiana plays tonight at Detroit and finishes at home against the Knicks the next night i in Market Square Arena. Washington finsihes its season Saturday against Atlanta. The Knicks play at Milwaukee tonight before the final game at Indiana on Saturday.

If the Pacers beat New York and end in a two-way tie with Washington for seventh, the Bullets would get the seventh playoff spot and Indiana would get the eighth playoff position because of Washington's 4-2 season series advantage over the Pacers. Indiana would then have to play Eastern Conference champion Boston in the best-of-five first round of playoffs. If the Pacers finish ahead of the Bullets, they would face second-place Detroit in the opening round. But Saturday night's game is of more immediate concern, since a loss to New York would give the Knicks a 3-2 season advantage over the Pacers. "We've been getting a lot of chances with other teams losing," center Steve Stipanovich said of the Pacers' playoff hopes in the final week of the season.

Beating Atlanta "was the first time we capitalized on Indiana has been in the playoffs only twice in its previous 11 years in the NBA, losing both times in the first round. Last year, the first season under Ramsay, the Pacers finished 41-41 but lost three of four games to Atlanta, in the playoffs. Indiana of 30 games during a recent slump, and Wednesday's victory gave the Pacers a 37- 43 mark going into the final two games this year. "We knew it was close to a do-ordie situation," guard Vern Fleming said of Wednesday night's victory. "But it's not over until it's over." Ramsay "said we were giving up, not playing hard," Fleming said.

"He said if we were going to lose, lose playing hard. That did it for us. It was time for us to just play. So we came out with intensity, looking to play, looking to win the AP Wait a Minute! Pistons Beat Bullets; Sixers Remain Alive By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NBA LANDOVER, Md.

Adrian Dantley scored 18 of his 31 points in the second half Thursday night to lead Detroit over the Washington Bullets 99-37 and give the Pistons a teamrecord 53 victories this season. The loss dropped Washington out of a tie for the seventh and eighth playoff spots in the Eastern Conference. The Bullets are a half-game behind Indiana and New York and has one game left. Indiana and New York each had two games left. Washington is a half-game ahead of Philadelphia.

Detroit opened an early 11-2 lead and was up by as many as 14 points in the first period. But Washington trailed only 45-43 at halftime and scored the first basket of the second half, tying the game. With Dantley scoring 10 points, Detroit opened a lead of as many as eight points before the Bullets trimmed it to 76-71 after 3 quarters. Dantley scored four points and Isiah Thomas added two to give the Pistons an 82-72 lead with 10:15 remaining. Washington was never able to get closer than five points the rest of the way.

76ers 104, Nets 101 PHILADELPHIA Charles Barkley scored 38 points and grabbed 19 rebounds to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a 104-101 victory over the New Jersey Nets Thursday night and set up a final weekend decision on the last two playoff spots in the NBA Eastern Conference. Barkley's two free throws and a tap-in basket in the final 2 minutes carried the 76ers to within 1 game of New York and Indiana and to a half-game of Washington in the four-team scramble for the final two playoff berths in the East. The loss was the 15th straight for the Nets and their 12th consecutive defeat on the road as they approached the end of their worst season since entering the league in 1976-77. The game was tied when Barkley hit two free throws to send the 76ers ahead 100-98 with 2:11 left. At the 1:24 mark, Barkley tapped in a field goal to make the score 102- 98.

Celtics 126, Bulls 119 BOSTON Larry Bird outscored Michael Jordan 44-39 and the Boston Celtics held off several Chicago surges in the fourth quarter for a 126-119 victory that ended the Bulls' road winning streak at seven games. The loss broke Chicago's sixgame winning streak and dropped the Bulls to 49-31 and into a tie for second place in the Central Division with Atlanta. It was the regularseason home finale for Boston, which won for the 10th time in 12 games. Bird's total left him 63 points short of John Havlicek's team record of 2,338 points in one season. The Celtics' last two games are at Atlanta tonight and at Chicago on Sunday.

The Bulls had cut Boston's biggest lead, 90-78 with 4:39 left in the third quarter, down to 104-100 with 9:16 to go in the game. The Celtics got the next four points, making the score 108-100, but Chicago went on a 6-2 spurt to draw within 110-106 with 6:10 to go. Bird's long jumper then began a 6-0 Boston run that got the lead up to 10 with 4:49 remaining. With the score 121-113, baskets by Jordan and Scottie Pippen closed the gap to 121-117 with 43 seconds to go. The Bulls then were forced to foul and Dennis Johnson sank three free throws to give Boston a 124- 119 edge with 22 seconds left.

The Bulls' last real hope died when Jordan's three-point shot bounced off the rim with 14 seconds to play. Danny Ainge finished the scoring with two free throws with 7 seconds left. Spurs 117, Rockets 116 HOUSTON Mike Mitchell sank a 25-foot jump shot at the buzzer to give San Antonio a 117-116 victory over Houston. A basket by Frank Brickowski with 49 seconds left gave the Spurs a 115-113 lead. Houston's Allen Leavell from Muncie Central then sank a layup to tie the score and moments later added a free throw to give Houston a 116-115 lead with 12 seconds left..
