There's No Way, a No. 1 hit by Alabama, was voted top contemporary ballad in country music Monday night at the sixth annual National Songwriter Awards. Lisa Palas, Will Robinson and John Jarrard, the writers of the song, were honored at the nationally televised awards show at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center.

The song is about a lover's faith for his mate. Mississippi Squirrel Revival, written by Cyrus W. Kalb Jr. and his wife, Carlene, was voted No. 1 comedy-novelty song.

The tune, about a squirrel running wild at a church service, was recorded by Ray Stevens, praised by Kalb in his acceptance speech as "the master of the comedy song." Later, winners were selected in four other categories: traditional ballad; contemporary upbeat; traditional upbeat; and country-rock. The winners in the six classifications were then eligible for the top award, song of the year. Actress Barbara Eden and Hee Haw star Roy Clark were hosts of the 2-hour ceremony. The syndicated broadcast was scheduled in 25 U.S. markets and will be shown on a delayed basis to much of the rest of the country in the next few weeks.

Among those who performed during the show were Lee Green- By JOE EDWARDS wood, Associated Press Writer Statler Dave Loggins, Harlan Howard and Bob McDill finalists in two Loggins categories was finalist in the country-rock category for writing 40 Hour Week (For a Living), which was recorded by Alabama, and in the traditional upbeat category for Everyday, which was recorded by the Oak Ridge Boys. Howard was a finalist in the traditional ballad category for his Somebody Should Leave, recorded by Reba McEntire, and in the contemporary upbeat category for Why Not Me, recorded by The Judds. McDill was a finalist for best traditional ballad for I've Been Around Enough to Know, recorded by John Schneider, and for contemporary upbeat song for Baby's Got Her Bluejeans On, recorded by McDaniel. Winners were chosen by readers of The Music City News, a monthly country music publication in Nashville. Officials announced earlier that Waylon Jennings and Roger Miller would be honored during the show for songwriting achievements.

Jennings was honored with the first annual Presidents Award from the Songwriters Guild of America for his help and service to songwriters. Miller was honored for writing the music for Big River, an awardwinning Broadway musical. the Oak Ridge Boys, the Brothers and Ray Stevens. The roster includes most of the big stars of the field including superstars Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn and Willie Nelson as well as legends Roy Acuff, Minnie Pearl and Grandpaw Jones. They all pay homage to the longest running radio show (the Opry began broadcasting 60 years ago and has never missed a broadcast since). Fans will not want to miss a minute of this festive occasion which ends with a special song about the Opry titled "The Greatest Lady of Them All." 9 p.m.
