Highway traffic on U.S. 27 South is using Smith Road as a detour, creating problems on the narrow county road. Highway supervisor Wanda Hartman told Union County commissioners Monday that signs have been posted on the road prohibiting truck traffic and setting a speed limit for the road. Hartman said she's asked the Indiana State Police to patrol the road and enforce the speed limit. County dispatchers have called her repeatedly about complaints about the traffic on the road, but Hartman said controlling traffic isn't her responsibility.

So far, no accidents have occurred, but cars have been forced off the narrow road, dispatcher Shirley Sexton said. The state highway department is replacing a small box culvert at the north edge of West College Corner on U.S. 27, a project that is supposed to be completed by late this month. The traffic from Ohio is supposed to be using other state highways during the construction period, but there were problems with the detour signs in Oxford, Ohio, and truckers missed them, Hartman said. Commissioner Charlie Dare, who also drives a truck, agreed.

"They didn't know where else to go when they got to College Corner," Dare said. Hartman asked the Indiana Department of Transportation to correct the sign problems in Oxford, which should reduce some of the problems on the narrow road. A hopper-bottom truck got stuck on the railroad crossing on Smith Road and the department has received numerous complaints from residents in the area about the traffic, Hartman said. Some residents have asked that Also Monday, the Union County Board of Commissioners: Authorized a Build Indiana Fund application to help with the estimated $250,000 cost of grinding and repaying old Indiana 101. Agreed that consultant Ray Fuller could conduct a seminar for county employees to explain the public employees retirement fund.

Smith Road be closed, but Hartman said she can't do that legally The county has a written agreement with the state that if Smith Road is damaged by the traffic, the state will pay to repair it, Hartman said. "We knew this was going to happen, and it shouldn't last too long, although (the work) didn't start on time," Hartman said. Also Monday the commissioners gave their approval for $225,745 in paving projects for 2001 The county will have $136,000 from local road and street funds and $57,000 in wheel and surtaxes next spring, so the work will only require another $30,000 in highway funds. "It's feasible if oil prices don't go up. It's just a projection at this point, based on bid-letting we did in October," Hartman said.

The county has 58.4 miles of gravel roads and will continue chipping away that total by paving about five miles a year. Gravel roads to be paved next year: County Road 50 North one-half mile E.CliftonRoad lmile County Road 250 South 0.3 miles.
