Here is the Union of South Africa, the most highly developed, most prosperous nation on the continent, the white man is strongest, most deeply entrenched and outnumbered by only three to one. Here, he is most determined to hold on to his way of life.

While the "wind of change" may sweep the rest of Africa, the white here, particularly the Afrikaner of Dutch extraction, is treadle to fight to the end rather than share his rule or be ruled by the black man. To a visitor, is a strange, tortured country full of natural beauty and human ugliness. But the board sweep of the veld, the vivid air of the high interior, the lush rolling hills and gracefull blue gum trees along the Indian Ocean coast do not quite make up for the oppressive atmosphere. MELTING POT This is a melting pot, where the human ingredients never melted. A land of mutual distrust, where the Afrikaner still resents the Englishman (who beat him in a war 60 years ago), and both groups of whites distrust the black man, the mixed breeds and the Indians, and all the nonwhite groups dislike each other, and the white man's dog barks only at the natives.

In South Africa, is a ghetto for almost everyone, real or imagined, voluntary or enforced, for rich, for poor, for Afrikaner, for Englishman, for black, brown, tan and off-white. This is a country of tension and fear, where some whites are selling out and moving aboard, where many (especially the English) are talking about leaving, where property values have tumbled because the white man Isn't buying and the black man can't.
