Letters asking for pledge renewals will go out this week to all 1975 Channel 49 supporters according to Mary Alice PelL chairman of the 1976 drive to support this area's only public television station. In her report to the Eastern Indiana Community Television (EICTV) Board Tuesday, Mrs. Pell said the letters represent the first step in pre-drive activities for the station's fifth membership drive. The EICTV Board discussed the possibility of a dual goal: One goal representing the amount needed to maintain current operations, and a second and higher one that would enable the station to add Sunday daytime programming if that goal were met. "We've been receiving lots of phone calls requesting Sunday programming to provide an alternative to the consistently sports-oriented daytime programming on commercial networks on Sundays," explained Robert W.

Faull, WIPB-TV station manager. One of the major drive changes decided on this year, Mrs. Pell reported, is to drop the "premiums" that were offered on a trial basis in last year's drive. The premiums were books and puzzles related to popular public TV programs; they were offered to anyone donating $30 or more to the drive. "We had more negative than positive reaction to the premiums," Mrs.

Pell pointed out, "and there was considerable expense to the station in their purchase and mailing costs." EICTV President Kelly Stanley thanked the WIPB staff for their extra time and effort in (1) helping to take a preview film on the "Roots of Our Freedom" series to several Muncie service clubs, and (2) working extra shifts on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to correct transmitter difficulties that forced the station off the air Christmas Eve. "Roots of Our Freedom," a 10-part series developed by the Indiana Bar Association as a Bicentennial project, will feature present day Indiana lawyers in historic dress engaged in historic debates. It premieres this Thursday at 7 p.m. on Channel 49. Ihc movie at muncie moH WANVILLt cGALUARO STS.

Is Colonel's Day Regular Dinner 2 STARTS TOMYI DOURUPIATUM IWOKONtYl A Ball State University music professor whose enthusiasm about the tuba is infectious will soon find himself performing before an audience in New York City's Carnegie Recital Hall. Les Varner, professor of musical performance and director of the Ball State Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble, will present a tuba recital at 8 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 18. Michael Phelps, former Ball State doctoral student who is on the piano faculty at Anderson College, is also on the program.

They will be assisted by Fred Ehnes, horn, Ball State music faculty member; Olga Sambuco, soprano, doctoral student in voice at Indiana University, and Phillip Black and Jeff Rideout, tubas, both Ball State students. Varner, who has played a major role in redesigning a Chechoslovakian and a Swiss tuba for the American market, will open his program with three movements of "Per Tuba Ad Astram" by Gregory Woolf. He will also play "Two Together" for soprano and tuba by Bruno Amato, formerly a member of the Ball State School of Music who is now at Indiana University, and "Sonatina for Tuba and Piano" by Halsey Stevens. Following intermission Varner will perform five movements from "Suite No. 1 for French Horn, Tuba and Piano" by Alec Wilder and "Silver" which was written in 1975 by Don A.

Malone, former Ball State doctoral student who is now on the faculty of Roosevelt in Chicago. The last number of the program is "Ludus for Three Tubas" by Vaclav Nelhybel. "Silver," written for a solo tuba and electronic tape and named after Varner's silver tuba, is composed of 30 pieces and each piece is 30 seconds or less in length, says Varner. In preparation for his appearance in New York, the tuba player will give two recitals, one in Gonz Hall at Roosevelt University in Chicago Wednesday, and and another Friday at Bowling Green University in Bowling Green, Ohio. From there he goes to New York City for rehearsals and the recital.

Varner, who joined the Ball State music faculty in the fall of 1969, has spent four years working with the Hirsburnner firm in Switzerland and the Cherveny company in Czechoslovakia to produce tubas which have the sound and responsiveness demanded by Americans whom he describes as "the best tuba players in the world." After being introduced on "The Six Million Dollar Man" last season, the Bionic Woman has died; been resurrected through the miracle of cryogenics; lost her memory of having been romantically linked with Bionic Man Steve Austin; regained part of it; and now stars in her own weekly series.

Actually this is the repeat of the second half of the two-parter which kicked off "The Six Million Dollar Man" this past September confused? so are we). In any case. Lindsey Wagner, in the starring role, doesn't overplay the superwo-man, and the yarn is sufficiently farfetched to keep viewers interested. 8 p.m. (ABC).

This compelling play won O'Neill his first Pulitzer Prize back in 1920 when it was first produced on and it is fascinating to discover many of the themes found in his later and even greater works bitter hostility between different generations in the same family, the dreams of those working the land of escaping by going to jea, etc. There are no (Bargain Mats.
