million bits of information on a surface the size of a dime The Honeywell people have been studying the application of laser technology to the mass storage of information in com puter systems They view the laser development as a possible inexpensive replacement for computer memory cores Illustrating the extent to which optical techniques can increase information storage density the Honeywell The contest between Bob Scott and Mel Broughton for the gubernatorial nomina tion is about as much of a lux ury as the party can afford So decision to stand aside was as close a thing to partisan statesmanship as you can ask True he enhanced his image with party stalwarts and reaped a million dollars worth of publicity in the process But it is far more difficult to say no when the fortunes beckon than it is to say yes We were among those who discouraged the former gover nor from getting into a race with Senator Ervin The two men simply represent two dif ferent faces of North Carolina
