In a story in the Sunday issue of the Indianapolis Star Welch himself was quoted in the opinion that some of the chuck-holes were three feet deep. Strangely enough there was only one casualty, Ernie McCoy, whose racer flipped when he hit a hole in the dirt track.

He was taken to a hospital for treatment of back injuries. The Star quoted several drivers who insisted that the track was the worst on which they had ever driven. Even a publicity man for Sam Nunis, the promoter, admitted that the track was "breaking up badly," the Star said. Welch and Nunis were hampered by weather in their efforts to get the track ready for the July Fourth race, according to the report. Both insist that the track will be "in perfect shape" for later races.

Meanwhile a crowd of 6,000 was getting a dusting to end all dustings. This sideliner wonders how it happened that the AAA, which yells so loudly of racing safety, permitted Nunis to stage a race on a track that obviously was unsafe. It hasn't been too- long since AAA officials, meeting in Washington, delivered noisy orations to the effect that all promoters, henceforth and suddenly, would be required to convince AAA inspectors that their tracks were completely safe for contestants and spectators. Isn't Detroit in America? The AAA, you remember, is the organization that holds a' big meeting and throws out a driver if he so much as shows up at an unsanctioned race meeting, even in the role of spectator.
