The child wus lying on her oack. flushed and breathing heavily. She turned her heud restlessly on thq. pillow and coughed —a short, cruelly hard, dry little cough. Clemency's heart missed a bent as she slipped a hand under the clothes end felt the small body- it was dry and burning hot. and in an instant she was hurrying in search of a thermomeler. Baba was still lying in a half stupor as Clemency lilted the little glass tube beneath an armpit. She knew enough about nursing to have realized at once thai something was very wrong, and as she held the thermometer up to the light and read the tale it told .a new (ear banished everything else from ner mind. Covering Baba up again she hurried out Into the passage, and a few minutes later was knocking imperatively on Syrie's bedroom door. There was no reply to either her first or second summons, and trying the door she found it locked. She knocked loudly again, and was still hammering against the paneling when Jon Amberley spoke from behind her: "What the devil's the mailer?" Lake Baikal, Siberia, believed the world's deepest, has been plumbed at 4,802 feet. You'll Love Our Flowers! 'Uaoa ill!" He frowned al Syne'f door "Syrie's probably taken some sleeping stuil—anyhow she would be no i>ood I'd belter come with you. What's up—tummy?" "Oh. no — 1 could cope with that," she answered. "I'm terribly afraid. Mr Amborley, that it may be—pneumonia." "What-" He was interrupted by the opening of Syrie's door. "Whai on earth's the matter? It's the crack ol dawn yet." she said crossly, her eyes heavy with sleep. "Baba's ill." Jon told her curtlj. "We ought to get a doctor at once." "Oh. good gracious!" exclaimed Syrie fretfully. "What oa earth's the matter with her?" "Pneumonia." Syrie looked at him contemptuously. "What nonsense—she'i got an ordinary cold." * • • T.TOW could they stand there arguing—and so helpless, thought Clemency angrijj. "1 am afraid it may be pneumonia. Mrs. Amberley." she said. "1 have seen a case of it before— but the doctor will know IT you will tell me where to ring him—" "Jon, ring Dr Rigaud." Syrie looked imperiously at her husband. "I've no Idea of his number, and 1 doubt very much if we'll gel through to Biskra at this hour." There was a note of helpless panic in Jon's voice. "Tell Piers." said Syrie. "He'll know what to do." Jon's face darkened. "No need for Piers. 1 can manage—I'll Qnd Rigaud's number." As soon as her husband had left. ! Syrie turned to Clemency. Plugging in the electric Kettle and then dragging olankets ott her own ocd. for she would not waste time asking for olher olankels, Clemency tried to shut out the thought thai It was only natural for Syne to turn lo Piers Bui the thought remained like another knl/c In the open wound in her heart, even though she told herself she must not thin* of anything now except thai there was a sick child on her tiand—that Baba might have pneumonia. NEVERTHELESS, as she ministered to Uaba with all the means al tiand. Clemency could not rid hersell of the frightening feeling thai all of the evil which she had sensed In this house from the Beginning, the hatred between brother and brother, and between husband and wife, had gathered itself into one cruel destructive force ot which the helpless child was the victim. Clemency WEE sitting beside her little charge when Syrie came upstairs again. In any circumstances the servants were usually moving by this time in the morning and now the whole house was astir Syrie said: "This is one ot tho« times when living In the middle ol the Sahara desert doesnt nelpl Piers can't get through Dy phone to the doctor, so he 1« going after him. Darling," she wnt down, "tell Mummy how you feel!" Bui Baba, who was holding Clemency's hand, Jerked away. "Cio way!" she muttered. "She doesn't know you." said Clemency gently. "She was quit* light-headed jusl now." Syrie drew a deep breath. ' Justine will help you. ru call her." She moved toward the door rather obviously glad to escap*. (T.
