B4 Sports PALLADIUM-ITEM, Monday, June 9, 1997 Roosters have powerful trio that strikes fear in oppostion Word is out around the Frontier League: watch how you pitch to Richmond's Morgan Burkhart. The 1996 league MVP hit 17 home runs last season. In Richmond's first two games of the 1997 season, Burkhart clubbed a tworun homer Friday night and a solo shot Saturday afternoon at Kalamazoo's Sutherland Field. Through three games in Kalamazoo, Burkhart has been walked seven times. With pitchers working Morgan around Burk- Burkhart hart like they are, he's on pace to walk 187 times this season.

"Burkhart is a professional hitter," said Kalamazoo manager John Pacella. "I can't let a guy like that beat me in certain situations. "In a tight game, I doubt that he will see a lot of pitches to hit. There's not too many guys in this league who are going him out regularly. We know that." But Burkhart isn't the only Richmond hitter who puts fear into Pacella.

Roosters have a very powerful lineup," Pacella said. "They have three of the best hitters in the league in the middle of the order. Burkhart, Kevin Holt and Steve Ruckman can all hurt on any given at In the Roosters first three games at Kalamazoo, Burkhart has batted third, Ruckman fourth and Holt fifth. Roosters Continued from Page B1 get 10 or 15 hits. Who knows?" Despite walking a man in each of the third, fourth and seventh innings, Hess faced the minimum while throwing just 85 pitches.

The Roosters turned a double play in the third, catcher Matt Buirley gunned down a would-be base stealer in the fourth and Hess picked a man off in the seventh. "I have to thank my defense," Hess said. "The guys in the outfield were flagging down balls and Ruckman, Berliner and Holt made that incredible play. The defense behind me was Lost in Hess' effort was Richmond's offensive output. The Roosters had 10 hits, including two home runs from right fielder Brent Forsee and a grand slam from Kevin Holt.

Forsee clubbed a two-run shot in the fourth and a solo shot in the sixth before Holt hit his grand slam in the ninth. "I was just wanting to get a hit," Holt said. "It's the first grand slam of my career and we had a no-hitter. I'm a happy camper today." The Roosters are now 1-2 after dropping their first two games of the season at Kalamazoo. "When you start a season like we did, you start thinking 'when are we going to win a Coffman said.

"We could've put together a string of losses before we got things figured out. just takes a lot of pressure off. The timing for this couldn't have been Richmond manager John Cate was not in Kalamazoo Sunday. He was attending his son's high school graduation in Richmond. "I wish John could've been here to see this," Coffman said.

"John lives and breathes this team and he works his rear end off so hard. "I know this is going to take a big load off his Richmond wraps up a four-game series at Kalamazoo tonight at 6:05 (Indiana time). Frontier League notebook SAM BUNDY Wants to be like dad Kalamazoo first baseman Ryan Dwyer is the son of former major leaguer Jim Dwyer.

In his first pro season, Ryan Dwyer is hitless in seven at bats and has struck out three times. He says he know it will be tougher to match his dad's 18-year major league career, but he's giving it his best shot. "Growing up around the major leagues was definitely Dwyer said. "I was around a lot of major league all-stars. I was around guys like Eddie Murray, Cal Ripken, Kirby Puckett and Kent Hrbek.

"I got a lot of opportunities that a lot of kids never get and I'm thankful for it. Now, I'm out here trying to do the same thing my father did. I want to get to the major leagues." During his career, Jim Dwyer played first base and outfield for the St. Louis Cardinals, Montreal Expos, New York Mets, San Francisco Giants, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles and Minnesota Twins. He was a .260 lifetime hitter with 115 doubles, 17 triples, 77 home runs and 349 RBI.

During the 1983 World Series with Baltimore, Dwyer went 3- for-8 at the plate with a double and a homer. Dwyer also carried a good glove, finishing with a .981 fielding percentage. Kalamazoo and Ryan Dwyer play at Richmond's McBride Stadium July 13-16 and Aug. 22-25. Another Munson behind the plate Mike Munson, son of former major league catcher Thurman Munson, is catching for the Frontier League expansion Canton (Ohio) Crocodiles.

Mike Munson, a Canton native like his father, was the first playsigned by the Crocs. The Crocs' stadium is named after Thurman Munson, who died in a plane crash. "We're excited to have Mike on our roster for our inaugural season," said canton general manager Joe Scrivner. "'He's a local guy who will get to play in the stadium named after his dad. "That's a great story in itself, but Mike is also a player who should make a solid contribution to our team." From 1969-1979, Thurman Munson was a fixture behind the plate for the New York Yankees.

He finished his career with a .292 batting average, 229 doubles, 32 triples, 113 home runs and 701 RBI. Mike Munson and the Crocodiles make their only trip to McBride Stadium Aug. 18-21.
