In 1978 the Los Angeles Dodgers became the first major league club to pass the three million mark in total home attendance.

In 1985 Seattle's Dave Krieg passed for 307 yards and five touchdowns, including four to Daryl Turner, to overcome Dan Fouts performance of 444 yards and four touchdowns. Each pro will seed each player and all of the equal seeds from each club vill play 18 holes scratch in a foursome against each other.

Each player will keep track of the number of holes won against each other player. The winning club will be determined by comparing the total of all the teams points of all the players in each flight. Only one point is available on each hole per player. Does this sound familiar? It should because it's the same format used in the Ryder Cup which is also being played next weekend. i by the Richmond Men's District Golf Association and leader Gary N.

(AP) Last season's football game against Missouri was one Indiana quarterback Dave Schnell would just as soon forget. "That was ridicu- 1'L Mind game Notre Dame, Michigan preparing for big one ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) Lou Holtz, that master mind-gamer, has been in top form while preparing for Notre Dame's clash with Michigan. The Fighting Irish, after an impressive 36-13 victory over Virginia in the Kickoff Classic two weeks ago, are No. 1, a position Michigan held in the preseason poll. The Wolverines, who have yet to play, now are No.

2. Of course, the Irish also are defending national champs and riding a 13-game winning streak, but that's just incidental to Holtz. Michigan coach Bo Schem-bechler never has won the mythical national football championship. It's the lone void in his otherwise brilliant career. Schembechler, naturally, tries to downplay the fact, but Holtz won't let him not until after the game Saturday, anyway.

"We didn't even mention Michigan until after our Kickoff Classic game with Virginia," Holtz said. "Bo has been talking to his players about Notre Dame since the '88 season ended." Schembechler doesn't argue with that. "It's the biggest opener we've ever had in Michigan Stadium, and I hope we can avoid first-game mistakes," he said. "Notre Dame has had a game and then two weeks to prepare. But we're going in figuring we've got a chance to win it." In Schembechler's opinion, winning the national champion- Schneli; Dave Schnell preparing for Saturday's rematch in Indiana's Memorial Stadium.

"But that was last year. You've got to forget about games like that. You're going to get intercepted once in a while, but you have to keep them to a minimum." 1 status Saturday when they visit the University of Michigan to take on the No. 2 Irish. This marks the 25th time the nation's top two teams have met. Notre Dame has been involved in seven previous games, winning four. Michigan has been involved twice, losing both.

Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. Indiana time and the game will be televised by ABC. end zone. I'm sure they're going to be very solid." Thompson, who rushed for 129 yards, and Schnell, who passed for 173 yards, scored two touchdowns apiece in last year's tie with Missouri. The new Missouri quarterback is Kent Kiefer, who passed for 226 yards and one touchdown but was intercepted three times in the victory over Texas Christian.

Despite being outained 487-284 in total yardage, Stull says defense "is the strength of our team right now. Our team is kind of like a jigsaw puzzle. We're missing some key parts, but I think we have some good players. "We have a long way to go in consistency and he said. The Tigers netted only 58 yards on the ground last week and allowed TCU 283 yards.

Still, Indiana coach Bill Mallory isn't convinced the Hoosiers have a big advantage, even with Thompson's running and Schnell's passing. "Missouri is a talented football team," said Mallory. "They have a big, strong defense. They're good hitters. The secondary is good.

They'll give us the same kind of problems Kentucky gave us back there. "Missouri has gone 180 degrees in offensive philosophy under Stull. They've gone to a wide-open attack, and our pass rush should really be tested," Mallory said. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. (Indiana time).

Indiana leads the overall series 3-2-1. The Hoosiers lost their season opener last week, 17-14 at Kentucky, when they were stopped on fourth down at the goal line in the final period. Missouri, meanwhile, rallied in the fourth quarter for a 14-10 victory over Texas Christian in Coach Bob Stull's debut with the Tigers. "We made a lot of mistakes, but it gave us a chance to see where we need work," said Stull, who sums up the key to beating the Hoosiers in three words: "Stop Anthony Thompson." Thnompson, Indiana's career rushing and scoring leader, had 117 yards and two touchdowns last week against Kentucky, raising his career total to 3,623 yards and 45 touchdowns. "He's a Heisman Trophy caliber running back," said Stull, "and they've got a great quarterback in Dave Schnell.

They played well enough to beat Kentucky but couldn't get it in the ship is almost impossible for Michigan or any other Big Ten team to do. "Oh, it would be exciting," he said. "But it's farfetched for us if you look at what we'd have to do. We'd have to win all 12 games that's beat Notre Dame here, UCLA out there, Maryland then win all out Big Ten games, and we play everybody except Northwestern. "We have Michigan State, Illinois and Iowa on the road, then we'd have to go to the Rose Bowl and win that.

That's asking an awful lot of this team, and I don't know if we can." Notre Dame and the Wolverines, on paper at least, match up very well. Both are big and fast, both have versatile quarterbacks and both have a stable of fleet receivers and solid running backs. And both teams were built with solid defense. The key for Michigan is to contain Irish quarterback Tony Rice. He ran for 70 yards, including a 3-yard TD sprint, and passed for 147 yards against Virginia.

"Tony Rice is a great quarterback," Michigan defensive tackle Brent White said. "Coach is talking about him like he's life and death. He runs like the dickens, but I do not see him getting aTD on me." Game Page B5 LaPorte's Dowell leads state rushers INDIANAPOLIS (AP) With 293 yards in 23 carries last week, LaPorte running back Duane Dowell is the state's unofficial leader in rushing after three games this season, the Indiana High School Athletic Association reports. The JHSAA will begin its comprehensive Weekly list of state football statistics next week. Dowell's 293 yards in a 42-6 victory over Chesterton last week gave him 585 yards for the season.

His closest known challenger is Travis Hollingsworth of Western Boone with 562 yards, the IHSAA said. Jeff McPherson of Marion is the unofficial leader in passing with 638 yards and seven touchdowns in three games. Jon McClain of Western Boone is the unofficial leader for touchdown passes thrown with nine. Brett Law of Sheridan is the unofficial scoring leader with 76 points, followed by Bryan Raymond of Clarksville Providence with 68 and Hollingsowrth with 66. Law set a national scoring record last year with 453 points.

Triple A Alliance sets attendance record COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) The American Association and the International League set attendance records during the 1989 season as more than 5 million people visited ballparks in the two minor leagues, the Triple-A Alliance announced. The American Association broke the 3 million mark for the second consecutive season while the International League drew more than 2.6 million people, breaking a record set in 1946, the Alliance said Thursday. The attendance figures were the highest in the 82-year history of the AA and the 106 years of the IL, the Alliance said. The AA had a total of 3,667,142 fans, while the IL attracted 2,613,247. The previous IL attendance mark of 2,358,279 set in 1946 fell in mid-August.

Buffalo of the AA became the first minor-league team to pass the 1 million mark in attendance for two straight seasons. The Bisons drew 1,132,183 this year. Among the clubs setting attendance records was Nashville, the Cincinnati Reds' top farm team. ALL TIMES INDIANA Television PRO BASEBALL Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh Pirates, 6 p.m.,WGN. Pete apologizes, Marge accepts ij i MILWAUKEE (AP) Marge Schott, owner of the Cincinnati Reds, says she's written to former manager Pete Rose to thank him "for a lot of great memories." In her first comments since Mariners owners announce big plans MILWAUKEE (AP) The new owners of the Seattle Mariners have big plans for the team that has never had a winning season. The big plans envisioned by Indianapolis businessmen Jeff Smulyan and Michael Browning do not include a change of locale.

"We would like to build an organization that we think will be as strong as any in baseball," Smulyan, a broadcasting magnate, said Wednesday after baseball's owners unanimously approved their purchase of the Mariners from George Argyros Mariners Page B2 "It's sad that Pete to this day doesn't feel he did anything wrong." Schott said she mailed her response to Rose on her way to Milwaukee on Tuesday. Giamatti banned Rose for life from professional baseball after Rose admitted to gambling illegally on sports. "The only thing I feel bad about with Pete, and I'm sure he does too, in his heart, is that he had a very strong image to give to the children," Schott said. Schott said if Rose's gambling hadn't come to light, she would have re-hired him to manage the Reds in 1990. "If Pete were to ever come back and work for us in any capacity, things would have to change so his image would be a little better.
