Take, for instance, "The 13th Warrior." John McTiernan shot this film Bev Bennett YOU may think you're just picking corn, but you're actually planting memories as you and your family explore farmers markets and roadside during this harvest season. The experiences you share with your children will last their lifetimes, says ty, they're ready to pick fruits and vegetables. A farm market is better for a slightly older child who you can explain things to. You can allow your child some freedom but still keep her in sight." When you pique your children's, interest, you'll whet their appetites as well.

Use adaptations of Lundy 's more than two years ago, and it is only now limping into theaters. Antonio Banderas stars as an Arabian Banderas adventurer, back before the year 1000, who ends up on a ship with a bunch of Vikings, battling an unknown evil entity. This movie has been so fraught with problems, it's a miracle it finally made it to theaters. But that doesn't mean you have to be the gullible one who buys a ticket. Universal Soldier: The Return If the idea of Jean-Claude Van Damme reprising a role sends a chill down your spine, consider that in this mindless action flick he is joined in his desperate attempt at acting by another great thespian.

That would be Bill Goldberg yes, "Goldberg," the pro wrestler. He and Jean-Claude are the good guys; Michael Jai White of "Spawn" is the bad guy. Need to know more? Oh, c'mon. The Astronaut's Wife Johnny Depp and Charlize Theron star in this weird combination of supernatural thriller and sci-fi. Depp is an astronaut who almost dies while in space, and by the time he gets home, something very creepy and mysterious has happened to him.

Theron is his much-suffering wife who ends up with a "Rosemary's Baby" sort of dilemma. If a far-out premise that you might not be able to buy. It was so nice that we could do things together." Lundy writes eloquently about Southern food in her new cookbook, "Butter Beans to Blackberries" (North Point Press, 1999). She says that when visiting a farmers market or an actual farm, making a connection with a farmer is important. "When you take your children to a farmers market, they'll have a sense of where food comes from," Lundy says. "Children can talk to farmers who will tell them how something is grown and how to cook it, and they'll be able to taste foods." A farmers market is also a social occasion, and children are always invited. "It's a neighborhood gathering," Lundy says.

"We talk to our friends, exchange ideas. It's kind of a party." She suggests you tailor your excursion to the age of your children. "When our daughter was just past toddlerhood, we went to a lot of pick-your-own farms," Lundy says. "Children have to be old enough to tell when things are big enough or ripe enough to buy. Since its inception in 1989, RCR has mined an area of music that has become immensely popular from a commercial standpoint. But even as that audience is whittled down to true believers, RCR isn't ditching its musical ethics. You may find this band playing punk festivals one day and appearing at jazz fests the next, but "Walk on Fire" is not for the trend-hoppers. (RCRSideOneDummy) "Swing hop" is what you'll find on Jimmy Luxury and the Tommy Rome Orchestra's debut album.

A classic Sinatra musing is mixed with ambient hip-hop, making for a '90s sound. Jimmy Luxury's story-style rapping and a running hip-hop beat are splashed with horn and vocal samples deftly assembled by Tommy Rome The lighthearted, laid-back grooves here belie the sophistication and dedication involved in assembling this zesty cocktail. Leifer believes this will be a fact of TV life for a while. "I'm discouraged that certain shows that I really think are interesting and different wind up on Lifetime now," Leifer says.

"Why couldn't 'Any Day Now' be on another network? Because those lead actresses are of a certain age?" Still, Overall and Leifer are far from finished. Leifer is a producer on the ABC sitcom "It's Like, You Know," and may eventually take on a recurring role. Overall has landed on "Ladies Man" with Sharon Lawrence and Betty White. "I'm so lucky to be working, I can't tell you," says Overall, who chuckles about the wardrobe worn by her cocktail-waitress character. It turns out that Overall was surprised as well.

She learned the WB was finally airing her no-longer-in-production sitcom "Katie Joplin" not from anyone at the network, but from reporters at the recent television press tour, where she was talking about her new CBS show "Ladies Man." "I think that's pretty rude," says Overall, not one to mince words. "Honey, they didn't even call me to tell me they were canceling it! Overall says that when the WB decided months before the show aired that it was going to dump "Katie," in which she played a Philadelphia radio-show host, she was given a simple reason for the move: "I was told it was the demographics." Carol Leifer can relate. Her WB sitcom, "Alright Already," in which she and Amy Yasbeck played single thirtysomethings in Miami, aired for the 1997-98 season. "They were very happy with the show creatively and where it was, and virtually assured us of a pickup," Leifer says. "And then about a week before the announcements, it started to get iffy and weird, and then two days later it was, 'We're not picking up the We really got blindsided." What Overall and Leifer have in common is the misfortune of being over 30 at a time when TV shows IF SPECTACULARS (Am her early videos, Julie Cypher, eventual ly became her life partner.

But Etheridge is the first to admit that her own tales of fate pale in comparison to the ones seen on "Beyond Chance." One of the show's stories, about a Holocaust survivor who was set up on a blind date with the girl who smuggled him food in a concentration camp, still gets to her. "I get goosebumps and all choked up every time I talk about it," Etheridge says. "Beyond Chance" gives Etheridge, 38, the opportunity to stretch her wings beyond the familiar territory of music. The relatively light work involved in hosting the program also gave her extra time to stay at home, which has become important to her ever since she and Cypher became the parents of two children. That may the biggest twist of fate in Etheridge's life.

"It is truly astonishing, becoming a parent," she says. "It has affected me as an entertainer, as a writer, as a working woman, in two ways. One, I don't want to work so much; and two, I want to work all the time so I can provide for my family. It's that sort of pull. Etheridge will soon be pulled back onto the road to promote "Breakdown," the two-time Grammy winner's first CD in four years.

"I wouldn't say it's a great departure from my first five albums," she says. "People want to know if having children has impacted my song-writing, but only in that it's made it more intense. I really haven't written a song about kids or something and I'm not writing Barney songs." by David Brian Waldon IN a sense, it's weird to see Melissa Etheridge on a soundstage and not singing. After all, for' the past decade she's been identified as one of rock's most ferocious singers, the female equivalent of Bruce Springsteen. But actually, as host of the reality-based series "Beyond Chance," Etheridge remains in her element not to mention that of The Boss.

"I am a storyteller," she says in her distinctively husky voice. "I get up on stage and I tell stories. I don't know if you've ever seen a concert, but I stand on stage 'and I like to talk. I grew up in the Midwest, and I'm very conversational, and when they told me what this show would like, I felt like, 'Hey, that's for The stories Etheridge helps to tell in Chance" aren't the run-of-the-mill variety. I "One was the simple twist of'fate that the man who has now been my manager for 17 years, his wife played soccer with women who came to a bar that I was playing at in Pasadena," Etheridge says. "And had that not happened, I don't know how long it would have taken to make it." Then there was the time the head of Etheridge's future record label was dragged to Long Beach to hear her play one night.
