THE MUNCIE MORNING STAR, MONDAY, MAY 6, 1935. 6 News Events From Cities and Towns In Eastern Indiana FOUR ARRESTS AT WINCHESTER Two Fighters, Bootlegger and Parole Violator Jailed. Winchester, May arrests were made by city and county officers yesterday and today and peace one parole violator was returned from Richmond to be taken to the reformatory. Nelson Fox, of Lynn, was arrested last night on a charge of assault and battery preferred by another resident of that town following a fight between the two. C.

P. Girton, Railroad avenue, was arrested this morning on a similar charge preferred by his housekeeper, after he is said to have "beaten her up." John Neitfield, of known locally as "the whiswater, ky man," was taken into custody Saturday afternoon on a charge of possession of unlicensed whisky. Those arrested had free entertainment at the jail by Roscoe Whitehead, of Havana, Cuba, locked up on a vagrancy charge. He amused his fellow prisoners by eating safety razor blades, nails, pins and various and sundry other "delicacies" and by telling fortunes. Cedric Farlow, 18, Richmond, was returned to this city as a parole violator, after being arrested by Richmond police for stealing a watch.

He recently faced Judge A. L. Bales in Circuit Court on a charge of having stolen a sum of money from a local dentist. that time he promised to "go straight" if his sentence was suspended. Less than two months after his previous encounter with the law he was again arrested by Richmond officers and will now have to serve a one-to-five-year sentence at the state reformatory.

Four Marriage Licenses. Marriage licenses were issued yesterday to 1 Edward Theodore Spence, 34, landscape gardener, Cincinnati, and Mary Evelyn King, 23, Sardinia, Kenneth Leonard Sullenberger, 21, laborer, Sidney, and Donna Laverne Ely, 24, Sidney, Walter R. Streich, 22, electrician, Chicago, Miriam Alta Humbarger, 19, Union City; Charles Edgar Cox, 18, farmer, Lynn, and Bertha E. Engle, 18. Carlos.

The Garden Club will meet at 7:30 o'clock Monday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. O. E. Ross.

Miss Mary Louise Carmichael, of Muncie, president of the state federation of garden clubs, will speak on cago flower show and "Interesting Gardens I Have Visited." The Caroline A. Palmer chapter, Daughters of the Union, will meet next Saturday afternoon with Mrs. Mary J. Dodds instead of Mrs. Arthur Purdy, as announced.

Edward Hecker, vice-president of the national society, will be present and give a report of the national convention held recently in New York City. At County Hospital. Miss Ruth Thompson, of Ridgeville, was admitted to the hospital today for treatment. Marvin Bousman and Lester Davis, both of this city, were dismissed from the 1 hospital today. Noble Elder, Winchester, was admitted today for treatment.

Mrs. Nellie Jones was admitted Friday night and underwent a major operation Saturday morning. Mrs. Carl Cunningham, of Ridgeville, was admitted Friday evening for treatment. Mrs.

Oliva Johnson, of Lynn, has been dismissed from the hospital. Winchester Short Notes. Thirty-eight home economics club leaders attended the project lesson given at the McKinley school Friday. The lesson on "'Three Meals a Day" was given by Miss Aneta Beadle, state nutrition specialist. Leaders prepared and served the noon meal.

The afternoon was devoted to the study of meal planning. Mrs. Gilvie Brown, county home economics chairman, was in charge of the meeting. At the close of the project lesson, Starley Hunter, home demonstration agent, outlined and distributed rules for the county club contest which is to be conducted during the next six months. The contest will begin Wednesday and run until November The next project lesson will be held on Thursday, June 27.

A lesson on baking of cakes, cookies and pastries will be given at that time. A capacity crowd attended the senfor class play, "Early Mourning." Friday night at the high school auditorium. The play was directed by Miss Lelia Dunbar. Special numbers were presented between acts by Miss Gertrude Turner, member of the class, Professor and Mrs. Beldon Leonard and Miss Bunton.

The accompanists were Marcella Gillum. Miss Lois Fraze and Miss Mary Hollingsworth, respectively. Delicacy Week, sponsored by the Randolph Hospital Guild, is being observed at the Randolph County Hospital beginning today and closing next Sunday. Gifts of food of any kind will be gladly received. Donors are asked to bring their contributions to the hospital office.

Saratoga- Announcements have been received of the birth of a son, Jay Emerson, to Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Kelloway of Detroit.

The mother was formerly Miss Delight Sarff of Saratoga. Mrs. Charles Price has returned to her home here, after spending the winter with her son, Joseph and family it High Falls, N. C. Miss Martha Fraze, student nurse at Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie, was the supper guest, Wednesday evening.

City, May Hartford. Stallsmith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Stallsmith, of here, was married to Glen E. Kennedy, of Montpelier, at Marion April 20 by the Rev.

J. A. Bray, retired minister, who performed the wedding ceremony of the bride's parents in 1907. The bride will reside in Willow Springs, where Mr. Kennedy is a government forest ranger.

Mrs. Kennedy is a graduate of the Montpelier High School and she was formerly employed in the office of the county auditor by Luther Speidel. She also was assistant to Noah Roderick, Township trustee. Mr. KenLicking, a graduate the Chester Center High School and of Purdue University.

Middletown- The Choral Club of the Sixth Street Church gave a surprise for Ward Bell Monday evening: at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Bell. Refreshments were served to Maurice Cooper, Harold McMullen, Herschel Davis. Wood.

Mary Scanlan, of Detroit, is spending several days with Merle Cook and family. Montpelier- The annual election of officers of the Baptist Mission Circle was held Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Harve Jackson. Those elected were Mrs. Roy Henderson, president; Mrs.

Jackson, vice-president; H. G. Morgan, secretary-treasurer, and Mrs. E. D.

Shadday, press reporter. A Junior Garden Club, under the sponsorship of the Montpelier Garden Club, was organized here, this week. Robert Park was elected president, and Harry Gaier, secretary-treasurer. The junior club will hold an exhibit this fall with the Montpelier Garden Club. Membership is open in the club for a limited time only.

The next meeting will be held May 15. The So Cha Rea Club members will be entertained Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Lena Moyer, The assistant hostess will be Mrs. Anna Ray. The members of Mrs.

W. H. Thornburg's class of the M. E. Church will entertain their mothers at a Mothers' Day dinner party at 6 o'clock Saturday evening, at the home of Mrs.

Hoy and daughter, Jane, spent the week-end with friends at Napoleon, O. HARTFORD CITY IS GIVEN FLAG Spanish War Veterans Hear State Commander. Hartford City, May a ceremony this afternoon at the city hall here, Converse Lucas Camp No. 90, Spanish American War Veterans, formally presented to the city of Hartford City an American Flag. The emblem is to be flown daily from the flag staff in front of the city hall.

Omer C. Bates, commander of the Spanish American War Veterans of the Department of Indiana made the principal address. William Kreke, senior vice commander, also attended. Both are from Terre Haute. H.

M. Gaines, commander of the camp here, presided. Following the ceremony, in which a number of veterans' and patriotic organizations of this and nearby cities took part, a joint meeting of veterans was held at the city council chamber. Commissioners to Meet. The county commissioners will open their May meeting tomorrow morning.

The day will be spent principally in going over claims against the county. The city council will meet Monday evening, at which time further action will be taken on the program of street repair which is to be put through here this year. No cases of contagion were reported in Hartford City during the month of April, according to Dr Samuel Harden, city health officer. The Cantalena choir, of Manchester College gave a recital at the Presbyterian Church here this afternoon as the first observance of National Music Week in this Several other programs are to be given during the week. On Tuesday evening, a community sing will be held at the city council chamber.

Earl Peters to Speak. Another drive to interest the public of this county in building and repair work will be made this week. A meeting of tradesmen will be held on Friday evening. On Saturday evening a meeting open to the general public wll be held at the city hall, with R. Earl Peters, state chairman of the Federal Housing Administration, as survey here to determine the speaker.

Miss Elizabeth Turner, of Indianapolis, spent a few days this week visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. N. B. Fred Burns spent Wednesday in Kokomo.

The Best Yette Club members entertained their husbands at a carryin supper Thursday evening at the home of Mrs. W. T. Middleton. Charles Schilling, who is a patient in Ball Hospital, remains about the same.

Mrs. Ed Warren, of Dayton, spent a few days this past week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mendenhall. Donald Schlotzhauer left Thursday for an extended stay in Fort Wayne.

Miss Manila Fraze and Mrs. Ed Warren, of Dayton, went to Fort Wayne Friday to attend the banquet for graduate nurses of the Methodist Hospital in that city. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gussman, of Columbus, spent the past weekend visiting with Mr.

and Mrs. W. T. Middleton. Miss Helen Teagarden, of Indianapolis, visited friends here Thursday and Friday.

In honor of Mrs. Lora Green of Swayzee, Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Sayers entertained at a birthday dinner Sunday. Mr.

Green and Mrs. Sayers are twin brother and sister. Miss Norma Webster entertained members of the Bridgette Club at her home here Tuesday evening. William Lorrick and family of near Maxville, spent the week-end in Terre Haute. Mrs.

At the Delaware County old people's home, Sunday, 8 group from Farmland presented a program of new songs and poems written by Charles Allen Gaylor. A scripture arrangement and interpretation of the Life of Christ was given by the author. Those taking part were Mrs. Docear Brooks, Mrs. Anna McIntire, Miss Virginia Brooks, Miss Mildred Carter, pianist, and Charles Allen Gaylor.

The 4-H Club of the Green Township school will meet Tuesday at the school house. Dunkirk- The senior class of the Dunkirk High School and the sponsor, Miss Helen Maley, held a May breakfast Wednesday morning on the river bank near Fairview. The' class also visited two supposedly haunted houses along the river. E. Church held its second annual banquet Wednesday evening in the basement of the church. The Ladies' Aid Society served the banquet at a large table for members and at an individual table for the speaker, Fred McClellan of Muncie, Russell Davis, the toastmaster, Mrs. S. R.

A toast to the wives given by Homer McDaniel and Mrs. H. Carter gave the toast to the husbands. Mrs. Opal Whitacre and Paul Barnum sang a duet.

Roxie Brown conducted the critics' report. Plans were made to plant a tree on the high school lawn, this to be an annual project of the club. Mrs. Bertha Gaunt gave the major paper, "Pictures We Should and the minor paper, "4-H Clubs." was given by Mrs. Edna VanTilburg.

The Alpha Theta Club will meet Monday evening with Miss Jane Brotherton. On account of the showing of the "Sequoia," by the legion auxiliary at the Rex Theater, there will be no auxiliary meeting Wednesday evening. Redkey- The Standard Bearers will entertain their mothers at a tea Monday afternoon at the country home of Miss Marceil Arnold, east of here. This the annual thank offering meeting. Those desiring transportation are asked to meet at the M.

E. Church at 1:45 o'clock Monday afternoon. Mrs. Enlus Smith and son, Keith Smith. visited last week at Michigan City with Mr.

and Mrs. Kenneth Smith. William Appenzeller entertained members of the F. A. B.

Club at her home on North Meridian street Friday afternoon. Salus Club members were entertained at the home of Mrs. H. L. Aukerman on North Meridian street, Tuesday evening.

Former Hoosier Describes April 14 Dust Storm Most Severe In West STORM PERRYTON, TROTS APRIL A This dust storm was described by Victor Keller, former resident of Wells County and Shideler, who now lives R. 1, Beaver, as the most severe one had seen in his thirty-two years residence in Oklahoma.

He sent the above picture, which was taken at Perryton, twenty-three miles southwest of his home, on April 14, to The Star. Mr. Keller said storm reached his home about 4 o'clock in the afternoon and continued until about 10:30 o'clock and that since that time there has been dust blowing constantly with the exception of two days. It became as dark as night and the dust filtered into the house, making breathing difficult and forcing them to keep wet cloths over their faces. Kemper, of Kokomo, SPICELAND TO HOLD FIELD DAY PROGRAM Homecoming for Academy Graduates Wednesday. Spiceland, May Wednesday, Spiceland will be host to the hundreds of former students and friends of the old Spiceland Academy and high school at an old-time field day, an event that has gone down in history as the outstanding relebration and homecoming in this section of Indiana. The following program has been arranged: Concerts by Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Children's Home Band of Knightstown at 9, 10, 12:30 and 2:30 o'clock. Three ball games: Freshmen vs. Junior High at 9 o'clock; Academy Alumni vs.

High School Alumni at 10 o'clock, and Cambridge City High School vs. Spiceland High School at 3 o'clock. Tennis, horseshoe and track events from 10 until 2:30 o'clock. Children's drills and grade school commencement in the gymnasium at 12:30 o'clock. Other entertainment for young and old.

Mr. and Mrs. Keith Felton spent Sunday afternoon in Indianapolis. Upland- As the storm approached, he said, several colors made it quite beautiful, "even though one knew its devastating effects." Close to the earth there was a black layer, then a grayish pink one and a yellow-tinted top. Flocks of birds flew ahead of it and live stock tried to keep in front of it.

Much of the stock died from its effects and many persons were made ill. He said that very little crops have been raised for four years and that none will be planted unless it rains soon. He said the people are destitute and expressed a desire to leave the country, if some of his friends here help him. This section had a hard snow and some rain last week. Summitville- Mrs.
