Sunday: 11 a.m., Sunday school for people Stand of red oaks saved by donations INDIAN RIVER, Mich. (AP) A stand of century-old rare red oaks that survived logging in the 19th century and disastrous fires more than 60 years ago has been saved once more. A non-profit group raised thousands of dollars to keep the 283 acres of 100-foot-tall trees from loggers, and the benefactors will get a reward on their 1986 tax forms. "It's the largest and least disturbed stand of red oak hardwoods in the state of Michigan and quite likely in the Great Lakes region," said Tom Bailey, executive director of the fund-raising group, Little Traverse Conservancy. The group had said the forest land valued at $1.25 million would take four years to buy too long to keep it from falling to the ax.

But about 400 people, many of them summer residents of the area, came to the rescue by donating cash and stocks before the end of the year. Many of the benefactors wanted to take advantage of liberal tax deductions on charitable donations under the old tax law, Bailey said Friday. The oaks sit on the western shore of Burt Lake at Colonial Point on land inhabited by Indians at the turn of the century and sold two years ago to James Devereaux, owner of a sawmill in Pewamo. The trees' unusually rich color and high quality caught Devereaux's eye, but he said he realized after he bought the land that the trees were just too good to cut down. "It's just an unusual piece of timber," Devereaux said.

"I don't think you'd match it anywhere else." The logging industry cut many trees in northern Michigan in the 19th century, and others burned in forest fires that swept the northern Lower Peninsula in the early 1920s. Devereaux said he doesn't know why these trees survived. "Some theorize the Indians never let it be cut and the fire missed it," he said. "I'm hoping there's a particular way to regenerate the oak." Grants and $435,000 from the State Land Trust Fund will help cover the cost of buying the land, but as much as $20,000 in loans may not be covered, Bailey said. "A lot of last-minute contributions we received were in the form of stocks and the transfer agents have been inundated with year- transactions, so we won't get a good idea of their worth for about a week," he said.

The forest will be turned over to the University of Michigan Biological Station on nearby Douglas Lake, which will conduct research and open i it to the public as a nature reserve, Bailey said.
