Encyclopedia Britannica is developing a "Microbook Library" which offers 20,000 volumes contained in files the size of two shoe boxes. The U.S. Government Printing Office has announced that its entire annual output of 75 million documents may be micropublished sonn.

Such recent developments which fuel the microfilm business' 18 per cent annual growth prompt some analysts to say that we're entering the "age of micropublishing." If so, it would be as significant to the business world as the data processing breakthrough 15 years ago. Business is based on information, the access to it and the dispensing of it. And that's the name of the microfilm game. It once was considered an archival tool, a means of storing outdated material so the bulky original could be destroyed, or for handling material that is rare, fragile or otherwise unsuited for frequent handling. Today, however, microfilming is as active a business tool as the computer, the calculator or the typewriter.

This came about because of (lie rapid development of lower cost and less cumbersome cameras and processors and better, cheaper readers and reader-printers. In March, for instance, Eastman Kodak brought out a microfilm reader selling for under $100 and weighing less than five pounds. Another breakthrough was the interfacing of microfilm with computers for business as well as scientific use. Today, computers spill their output directly onto film, bypassing paper printouts entirely. Microfilm pickup directly from the computer's magnetic tape can produce 90,000 characters per second, or a 500-page book every minute.

Microfilm is adaptable to almost every area of human experience government records, business material, personal records, school work, even (lie housewife's kitchen. It saves up to 98 per cent in file area. It is speedy. Banks can film checks at a rate of more than GOO per minute. In short, microfilm offers a quick, efficient and economical way to record, retain, retrieve and distribute information.

Last year a New Hampshire department store with $1.5 million outstanding credit was burned and all records destroyed. Because the store had microfilmed all credit accounts and moved the security files off the premisr- it could account for all but $8,000 of the outstanding credits. Middlesex County in New Jersey recently aimounced it will microfilm all deeds, dating back to land transactions during the Revolutionary War. British Aviation Corp. and Sud Aviation of France are building prototypes of the Concorde Supersonic airliner, a project which has generated more than 330,000 engineering drawings.

Without microfilm it would be impossible to work with so many drawings. Same was true when Boeing put the 747 together. All engineerings drawings Parts catalog, a six foot long, 85 pound document listing 85,000 parts, has been reduced to two microfilm, cassettes, each slightly larger than a deck of playing cards. Small wonder, then, that analysts predict microfilming will burgeon to a $1.025 billion business by 1975. The average oven takes 10 minutes to pre-heat, says the American Gas Association.

Drinks flowed, couples danced in the converted baggage car and the bands playeti on. Las Vegas welcomed some 3,000 new tourists via the special Amtrak cars. Now, after nine weekend runs of varying success, the fun train will leave the resort city and probably won't return until the fall. The Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce which sponsored the gambler's special said the government rail corporation will use the oars for summer excursions else'shere in the country.

Chamber president James Cashman said the three-month experiment isas a qualified success, although passenger volume declined slightly when the trains were rescheduled on a Sunday-to-Tuesday run. The move, said Cashinan, was aimed at bringing more weekday revenue to Las Vegas, but it also sacrificed the freewheeling under-30 crowd in favor of the retired set. Two acres of property owned by Fern Matthews has been surveyed and is ready for subdividing, it was reported by Robert Nelson, surveyor. Don Carlock, president of the newly organized Kuna Jaycees told the council the Jaycees would be willing to aid in city projects. Complaints were heard from residents of students speeding near the Kuna High school.

They were advised to sigh complaints and present them to the presiding judge of the magistrate court in Meridian. Marion Van Scholack has been named new city commissioner of the city fire district. It was decided by the council not to furnish water to anyone living outside the city limits due to the lack of funds.
