in- MUNCIE STAR, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 1959 D-3 Week's Gain of Mart Best Since July NEW YORK (AP). The stock market worm turned this week in a vigorous rally from the barely interrupted decline of August and September. The turnabout came in midweek after the Associated Press average had sunk to its lowest level since Feb. 9. Two days of strong recovery, a third of irregular consolidation.

left the market with its best weekly rise since the last week of July. Brokers agreed the recovery was not accompanied by any particular news to spur the market. Prices had declined point where they were attractive. Motors were the big pacemakers in the upsurge, especially the two markers of "compact" cars which now face competition from the Big Three. These firms, American Motors and Studebaker-Packard, reached one high high after another.

Trading swelled to 16.011.460 shares from 12,222,297 the week before and was the heaviest since the week ended July 11 when 719,665 shares were traded. Drops Since Visit Plan The AP average of 60 stocks rose $2.60 to $220 for its best weekly rise a since the week ended Aug. 1, when it a advanced $3.30. This was just before the Khrushchev Eisenhower visit exchange plans were announced Aug. 3.

From that date until the Tuesday close the stock market had lost an estimated 27 billion dollars in quoted values, based on the fall in the AP average. An estimated dollars of this was recovered in the final three trading sessions this week. The Dow Jones industrial average advanced 6.81 to 632.59. In the bond market, volume rose to its highest point in 13 years. This was due to buying of convertible bonds, which soared along with the rise of their counterparts in the stock market.

Volume for the week was 631,000 par value, highest since the week ended Jan. 19, 1946. This compared, with $31,451,100 $31,765,000 for the last corresponding week in 1958. Government bonds, which had been beaten down to historic lows, recovered a bit as they began to look attractive again to a few buyers. Redkey REDKEY, and Mrs.

Soybeans Active in Pit; Wheat Slips CHICAGO (AP)-The grain futures market had moments of both strength and weakness this week but new influences lacked significant force and prices finished little changed. Advances on some days ran to a cent or more a bushel in most of the pits on factors which appeared to be used more for guidance of speculative operations on the Board of Trade. Real solid commercial support was generally absent although there was a fair volume of export business in wheat and corn from time to time.

Hanging over the market with no diminishing bearish effect were continued reports of good crop development. Interest in wheat futures Thursday dropped to such a low point that less than four million bushels of grain, less than onethird the normal amount, were traded in the pit. Activity in soybeans attracted major interest and accounted for more than half the total trade volume on two days. At one time most of those deliveries were ahead almost three cents a bushel on reports-later discountedthat yields from the early part of the harvest were running surprisingly low and that production probably would be far less than the government's estimate of million bushels. Although corn closed with skimpy gains it had fallen to new low prices for the season again before setting off on a moderate rally at midweek.

At the end of the week, wheat was cents a bushel lower, December corn unchanged to higher, December oats higher, December rye unchanged to lower, December soybeans higher, November The command of the United States Army was offered to Robert E. Lee by President Lincoln on April 18, 1861. Early Sales of '60 Cars Will Be Guide By BEN PHLEGAR AP Automotive Writer DETROIT (AP)-The 1960 cars start rolling from dealers' showrooms this week. If you buy one you are going to become an extremely vital statistic to the automobile industry. Every car deal between now and Christmas will be scrutinized, studied, weighed, evaluated and debated.

The conclusions finally drawn in Detroit could have a drastic effect on the entire industry. The automakers will try to determine why you bought a car and why you picked the particular make, size, body style and price range that you did. Four new lines of American built cars are on the marketthe greatest increase in selection in more than 25 Three of the new lines--Falcon. Corvair and Valiant -are smaller cars. The fourth new line Dodge Dart-is also smaller in its own way, being four inches shorter than the regular Dodge and designed to sell in the Ford, Chevrolet, Plymouth price range.

The industry has more small cars waiting to come to market. Just off stage is the B-0-P car of General Motors and the Edsel from Ford. Both of these are said to be fully operational, slickly styled models to bolster the sagging medium price lines. The Edsel could be brought to market in the early spring. The B-O-P car, which would be built in the common assembly plants of Buick, Oldsmobile and Pontiac, might be available by July.

Or both could be delayed indefinitely. That's why sales in the immediate weeks ahead become extra important. Marketing decisions by Ford and General Motors will hinge to a great degree on the way buyers greet the 1960 models. Rambler and Studebaker Lark, continue to gain, and if you snap up the Falcons, Corvairs and Valiants, then it is almost certain these, other cars will be introduced as soon as possible. But if sales of the smaller lines are only adequate to good at the start, you can be sure the companies will want a longer look at the situation.

At least one other interesting decision may depend on early 1960 sales. This involves Chrysler which with the and Valiant will be offering seven lines of cars. It has been suggested that seven is too many, especially when the new Dart is being put into direct competition with Plymouth and in a price class where Plymouth often runs a distant third to Chevrolet and Ford. In its announcement of the Valiant a week ago Chrysler appeared to show more enthusiasm for the compact concept than did Ford or Chevrolet. If this is the case at high levels, it might be that one of the two so-called popular price lines would be dropped, or replaced by a compact series.

And it might be Plymouth. SwiftMeeting Set by Mediator CHICAGO (AP)-A federal me. diator has called a meeting for Monday in an effort to settle a strike at Swift Co. which has invited its 17,000 strikers to return at higher pay. The meeting of management and the United Packinghouse Workers and Amalgamated Meat Cutters negotiators was called by William G. Murray of the U.S.

Conciliation Service. Swift's offer of a raise of cents an hour, made directly to striking workers by letter, was rejected by the unions last week. The Swift plants have been struck since Sept. 4. Union leaders predicted the strikers will ignore the offer to resume work at Swift plants which have remained open during the strike.

Swift is making the wage increase retroactive to Sept. 1 and is incorporating into the basic wage a cost-of-living adjustment of 14 cents an hour. It also increased premium payments for weekend and night work. "The average pay in Swift contracts that expired Aug. 31 was $2.56 an hour.

Swift said it is putting into effect the increased benefits in the hope the workers would return to their jobs while negotiation of other disputed issues proceeds. The unions have accepted from Armour Co. and most other major packers wages increases of cents an hour this year and cents an hour next year. Union members are working in Wilson Co. plants although new contract negotiations have been recessed indefinitely.

A major issue in the Swift walkout is a wage differential between Southern plants and those sevother cities. Swift said its cents increase will not apply to the Southern plants. There the increase is 2 cents an hour. THE MUNCIE STAR MUNCIE EVENING PRESS THE SUNDAY STAR High and Jackson Streets DIAL AT 8-6631 Office Hours 8 a.m. to 6.
