Evey, Leonard drops WBA middle title NEW YORK (AP) Sugar Ray Leonard is back to being a one-title champion, but his fighting future Is filled with possibilities. Leonard, who held the World Boxing Council welterweright title and the World Boxing Association junior middleweight title, became the undisputed welterweight champion last Wednesday night by stopping Thomas Hearns, the WBA 147-pound class champ. Rodrlgo Sanchez, WBA president, said Wednesday in Panama that he has received a telegram from Leonard stating: "This is to advise you that Sugar Ray Leonard elects to retain the WBA welterweight title and remain undisputed welterweight champion of the world." Leonard had been able to hold two titles because the WBA didn't recognize him as welterweight champion and the WBC didn't recognize him as junior middleweight champion.

But when Leonard beat Hearns, he held two titles recognized by the WBA and under the rules has to surrender one. ABC, ESPN creat joint pay-TV venture NEW YORK (AP) ABC and cable television's ESPN sports network have agreed to create a joint pay-TV venture that will compete with other broadcast outlets for major sports events, like the recent $35 million boxing match between Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns.
