(Tribune photo by Jim Quitting Smoking Like Going To Funeral, Indicates Study DALLAS, Tex. (AP) - H was like a funeral that day in New Canaan, Conn., when (be housewife therapy groups had to stop · smoking. After helping them kick the liabil, their psychiatrist concluded the inability (o cope with the grief of losing a dear friend--the cigarette--is one reason so many smokers can't quit. "The depression was so pervasive in each group that the clay the subjects were to slop smoking, they all looked as if they were attending a funeral," Dr. John S. Tamerin of the Silver Hill Foundation in New Canaan says in a paper prepared for delivery lolay before the American Psychiatric Association. Tamerin, director of research at the foundation's private psychiatric hospital, told the psychiatrists about working with 10 women divided into three thera- py groups. Tlicy met each day for two weeks, reducing smoking gradually the first three days and slopping Hie fourth day. As the noncigarclte days wore on, the women acted much like mourners at a funeral, comforting one another through their tears, he said. ' "A transient period of grief with considerable tearfulness appeared as an almost routine clinical accompaniment of the cessation process," Tamerin said. Tamerin said one woman likened giving up cigarelles lo the loss of n dear friend. Another said, "f think my cigarelles are more like a lover than a friend. I see this as a terrible, personal loss." As [he 14-day therapy neared an end, success came lo the former smokers when they learned to recognize, accept and then "work through" to an understanding of their loss am grief. "The dynamics of grief ant loss appeared lo be central to [he entire cessation process,' Tamerin said. "Subjects gener ally agreed lhal they had neve before in their lives given U| anything as meaningful or pain ful." At the end of Iwo weeks smoking had dropped for thi women from an average of 3 cigaretles a day lo 1.5 a day and 11 women had slopped en liroly, Tamerin said. But thre. months later, the inevitable backsliding had sot in. Fivi women were back to their prio smoking levels and the grou averaged 14 cigarelles a day. "Jusl as in the area of alco holism, long-term support is in dicatcd and a volunalry, non profit organization modeled i some ways on Alcohol! Anonymous might be useful, Tamerin said.
