«,Wednt«diy, March 10,197S -C-2 IN THESE DAYS rf equality for the sexes, don't forget a garter for the groom as well as the bride! And the place to find one, as well as in «t*nslv* collection of supplies and accessories for weddings and anniversaries, Is in Cher Lin's Scales will cost 10 cents J T U C S O N , Ariz. ( U P t ) Inflation has more than caught up with the old-fashioned tor- tiine-telling penny scale. II soon will cost 10 cents a weigh, and it won't even tell fortunes. ! A new scale about half the size of the old-fashioned kind was invented by Keith Moser, a senior engineering student at th.e University of Arizona. It will provide a coin-operated digital readout said to be accurate to Ihe nearest halfpound or fourth- kilogram. Moser's scale also will laminate things and sell stamps. ;His design won Moser J1.500 and a guaranteed job with the manufacturer, Carlton VanGorder, a Jucson resident who plans lojppe'ri a new factory in Puerto Rico. VanGor'der, president and owner of Watling International, calls Moser's scale very stable, rugged, thiefproof and economically manufacturable. VanGorder bought the company from Thomas Watling, who invented the coin-operated scale in 1889 and manufactured it for sale to drugstores, variety and department stores throughout the world. Watling also was inventor of the first slot machine for gambling. The new owner says the 10-cent scales will sell for about $600, or about half as much as the penny variety. at Karcher Mall. Not only does the store offer bridal photograph albums, bridal books, cake decorations, doilies and candles, but they stock supplies for the next step in a young couple's life . . . baby books. At ease Leisure suits have established a firm position in men's fashion. Among the styles popular this season are shirtsuit looks, shirt- jacs, safari outfits, golf jackets and short "Ike" battle jackets. CAUGHT IN Ihe act, says the look given the camera by Leslie DcAnn Lady and Benjamin Maxwell, both 1 year old. Leslie's perky outfit comes from the ABC Kiddie Shop, and includes a pink and while candy striped pinafore over a basic pink dress with puffed sleeves and ruffles, by Nannette. Her pink and white anklets we by Trisnfit, and those tiny white patent leather shoes are Shoo-Eez. Puffing out her skirt is a bouffant white slip trimmed in pink over pink ruffled panties by Isaacson Carrico. The accessories rounding out her ensemble are a pink and white bonnet, white purse and gloves by H. J. Lehman and Company. Benjamin owes his sporty look toa white sailcloth short-panl suit trimmed in navy blue. Under his jacket he has a blue polka dot shirt and bow lie by Bryan's. His navy blue knee socks and blue and white patent leather shoes accent the suit's trim. Sunglasses offer stylish protection THE AGE of computerized, push-button sewing is here, says Karen Friesen. as she models a springtime dress she made from a Butterick pattern on an ATHENA 2000 sewing machine. This electronic machine, which can be seen at Singer's in Karcher .Mall, features design elegance, feather-touch controls and a solid stale circuitry. Even the pleats went together smoothly and easily, says Karen, with the one-touch electronic stitch selection of this sewing machine. There were 120 million pairs of nonprescriplion glasses sold in the United States last year, and they were purchased for three very important reasons: comfort, protection and fashion. Celebrities started the sunglass trend. Now almost everyone has sunglasses. They're worn today not only for comfort and protection when the sun's glare is troublesome. They serve also as a smart, good- looking accessory. Year-round cnmfor! Sunglasses used to be a seasonal item. Now they're a y e a r - r o u n d product. They're worn for comfort even on normally sunny days. They're as much in demand in the snow belt -- for skiing or shopping, say -as they are on the beaches in the sun hell. People have usually bought sunglasses for their lenses and their frames. A relatively new development for sunglasses has made Ihe selection of Ihe lenses especially important for all three reasons of comfort, protection and fashion. It's Ihe use of glass lenses that a u t o m a t i c a l l y darken in sunlight and tighten in the shade and indoors. From sun to shade Sunglasses thai darken in Ihe sunlight and lighten in the shade give the added dimension of convenience -- Iney don't have to be removed and stored when moving from sun to shade to indoors. They also have added fashion appeal because they lighten so that people can see the eyes behind.the.glasses. Tinted trer.ds Like m a n y other f a s h i o n trends, the brown [ i n l far sunglasses originated in Europe, where this color has been popular for many years. Crowing popularity of the photochromic lenses led to Ihe introduction of brown Sunsensor lenses to^.xomplement the popular gray lense.s.. .The d a r k e n i n g a n d lightening process of Sunsensor lenses is smooth and gradual and barely perceptitile to Ihe wearer. People's choice This explains why increasing numbers of people ask about the lense as well as look at the f r a m e s when choosing sunglasses.
