OREELEY (Cute.) TRIBUNE Wed., April», IIJ3 Colorado Chi Chapter announces meeting plans Colorado Chi Chapter, Phi Sigma Alpha, will entertain Alpha Zeta Chapter at 7:30p.m., Wednesday, April 25, it was announced at the last meeting held in the home of Mrs. Edward Boresen. The annual summer picnic is set for June 24, at the' A. M. Gillespie home. For the program, "The Sound of Music," Mrs. Harold Hyde gave a brief history of American music. During the Revolution, the first native popular music emerged from the heat of battle, such as "Yankee Doodle" and "Bunker Hill." From the earliest history, Americans have sung their experiences, trouble and aspirations. The Negro slave introduced the spiritual. Ragtime, jazz and blues were played in minstrel shows, one of the best known being "St. Louis Blues." Kock music was first introduced in 1954 and is a part of a long tradition of folk art. Pop music contains two major styles, popular art arid folk art, with people expressing their deepest emotions, concerns, political and religious convictions. Kate Smith was cited as one of America's most beloved singers. Music, in large, measures a nation's growth. Songs followed the frontier, accompanied Industry in its expansion. It went into the mines, penetrated the hills, was sung in the fields, forests and on ships. It was derived from Ihe many nationalities coming to America. The sound oi music is found in every home in one way or another and now is in nearly every place of business. Mrs. Hyde closed by playing a recording of "Sound of Music." Officers will be installed at the next meeting in the home of Mrs. Arthur Moinat. Mrs. Lester Kline will be in charge of the program. LOGICAL SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- Seven-year-old Juaniti Haywood told her mother that when she couldn't sleep at night, she counted sheep. "And when I'm in bed and hungry," she added, "I count lamb chops." To prevent a child's rocking chair from tipping over backward, tack small corks to the ends of the rockers.
