But a mass extermination pWject has done little to elihiinate an estimated 1.5 million blackbirds that city officials say present a health hazard. ·"'...There's still an unbelievable number of birds remaining,'' said Haducah City Manager William HowerUm Sunday. "It doesn't look like we made a dent in killing them. There's still plenty flying around." A plane flying at tree-top level Saturday night sprayed the birds with 800 gallons of the chemical Tergitol. The soapy chemical removes the protective oil from the birds' feathers, causing many to die from exposure to freezing rain.' 1 But now getting rid o f t h c dead birds may be a problem. "11 looks like the birds that did die will be left to be eaten by other animals," said a loeal member of the Audubon Society. The study concluded that pfotolems with the Dalkon Shield wtere not common to the other [our lypes of lUU's now marketed in the U.S. The report cited 209 cases of septic spontaneous abortion and 11 maternal deaths in the United States in women using the Dalkon Shield, ·Vi:The tail of the Dalkon Shield is structurally and functionally different from the tails oHhe four other lUD's tested," the^reporl said. "The unique characteristics of the Dalkon tall theoretically could provide a mechanism whereby pathogenic bacteria from the vagina enler the uterine cavity and cause sepsis." Sepsis is a poisonous condition resulting from the spread of bacteria. The Dalkon Shield's manufac- lurer recently recalled all existing on-lhe-shelf stocks of the old model, pending production of a new model Dalkon Shield with a modified tail. The Food and Drug Administration issued a moratorium on its use last June. They study was conducted by a research group of the Population Council, Kockefeller University and the Cornell University Medical College. Israel expansion JERUSALEM (UPI) - The Israel Ministry of Commerce and Industry predicts the country's industrial expansion will rise 11 per cent a year over the next four years. Ministry experts say some 40 percent of the added output will be exported, with foreign sales expected to double 10 around $2,9 billion by 1978. The extermination project was initiated after the birds refused lo leave the area, despite persistent efforts from residents to shoo (hem with loud noises. Doctors say bird droppings cause a disease known as histoplasmosis, which attacks the respiratory system, and in some cases can cause blindness. A similar problem exists at Ft. Campbell, Ky., eighty miles southeast. Dqspite the limited success in Paducah, Army officials at Ft. Campbell, are considering a similar attack on millions of birds roosting on their military reservation. But the Pentagon wants to be sure the chemical is not hazardous to humans. "We expect some type of decision for a go-ahead today or Tuesday, at the latest," said George Atkins, mayor of Hopkinsville, which is located near Ft. Campbell. "The Army is still consulting with impartial scientists, some here in Kentucky, going over its bird-killing plan using the spray to make sure that it's sound," said Atkins "If action by the Army is nol expedient, we'll be very disappointed." Millions of the blackbirds roost on the military reservation at night then i( daylight fan out over the surrounding countryside playing havoc with the farmers' feed and the area residents. A federal appeals court last week overruled an attempt by two wildlife protection groups to halt the spraying at the army post. Manila chosen for chess AMSTERDAM (UPI) - The International Chess Federation said loday it has accepted Manila's $5 million offer to stage a world championship match between Bobby Fischer and Kussian challenger Boris Karpov starling June l. The Russians immediately objected. Manila was Fischer's choice Karpov wanted to play in Milan, which offered $«0,000 in prize money, saying Manila was too hot. Because of the disagreement, the chess federation, known by its French initials as FIDE, had lo decide. Nikolai Ryndin, cultural at- tache of the Soviet embassy in Holland, told newsmen his federation rejected Ihe FIDE decision "for technical reasons." A FIDE spokesman said Ihe Russians objected because they said a telegram lo FIDE Ihis month staling Fischer's preference (or Manila had nol been signed by the world champion from Brooklyn. FIDE Vice President John Prentice of Canada said Manila was chosen because of the propaganda value of a match in Asia, because of Ihe Philippines' reputation as a good organizer and because !hc prize money by far exceeded all other offers. Mexico had offered $400,000. He said the Phillipincs, in addition lo the S5 million purse, offered to pay for Ihe match arrangements, estimated at nboul $1 million, and pay $150,000 lo FIDE. BOSTON (DPI) - Dr. Ken nelh Edelm says ihc jury lhat convicted him of manslaughter for the dealt] of a fetus in a legal ahorlion was stacked against him. "It was a witchhunt," Edclin said in tin interview with DPI. "I don't Ihink this jury was fair. 1 don'l Ihink it would have been possible lo gel a fair jury in Suffolk County (Uoston) no matter luw many challenges we might have had." An all-white, nine-man, three woman, predominantly Koman Catholic jury returned a guilty verdict Saturday against the black obstetrician, ending a six- week trial. "A lot came together for them (the prosecution) in my case," Kdeliii said, his shoes propped on a huge oval desk covered with legal briefs and medical texts. "They gol a black physician and they gol a woman more than 20 weeks pregnant and they got a fetus in the mortuary." Edclin, former chief resident obstetrician at Uoston City Hospital, said he first thought Judge James McGuire's charge to Ihe jury would insure an acquittal. The judge told Ihe jury manslaughter requires the death of a "person" which he defined as an infant "born live" and outside the womb. The defense fell the charge supported their case since Ihe prosecution throughout Ihe lria claimed Edelin killed a baby which was "born or in the process of being born. But, Kdelin said the optimism dimmed to "concern" as the first day of deliberation passed. When Ihe jury recessed for Ihe nighl he said he was won led. Edelin said he saw the guilty verdict on the faces ol the jurors early Saturday aflernoon, even before Ihe foreman read it. When (he jury strode in and "none of them would look me in the eye," Edclin said, "I began to get very apprehensive." Kdelin inhaled his cigarette, blew a smoke ring and said: "As it turned out the die was cast when we picked all (Ihe) jurors. Alternate juror Michael Ciano charged after Ihe verdict that racial slurs against Edelin had been made "more than once" before closing arguments. Ciano quoted one juror as saying, "That black nigger is as guilty Ship withdrawn MIAMI, Fla. K d e l i n , 36, prcdicled his conviction would trigger anli- aljorlion prosecutions across the country, even in pregnancies ifrniiiiiilcd as early as Ihe 13th or Hih week since the prosecution convinced Ihe jury in Boston any fetus, so long as il was nol dead in its mother, has to 'jc treated as a person.
