22 GREELEY( Colo.) TRIBUNE Men.. June 6.1977 Turkey swings to left as voters go to polls By SYLVA.N'A KOA ISTANBUL. Turkey (UPI- Former Premier Buler.t Ecevit's party today took a commanding lead over backers of conservative incumbent Su- Icyman tomirel in legislative elections and may have won enough seats to install Turkey's first left-wing majority government. With 81.5 per cent of Sunday's .vote counted, unofficial returns showed Ecevit had captured 180 seats in the 450-member National Assembly, compared to 148 seats for the right-wing Premier DemireFs Justice Party. Splinter parties accounted for an additional 39 seats. Ecevit said aides projected his Republican People's party would capture · at least 222 seats, and as many as 233 when all ballots from Sunday's voting will be counted. He predicted 173 to 186 seats for Demirel's party. "The results are already clear," Ecevit told a festive early morning gathering of supporters outside his Ankara headquarters. "I promised you I would be premier by six o'clock of the sixth day of the sixth month but it has happened sooner." Ecevit said he would form a government even if he fell a few seats short of a majority. "The people will be the government," he said. As expected, the 51-year-old Ecevit did best in the more liberal urban areas, winning by a two-to-one margin in Istanbul, Turkey's largest city. But Ecevit, whose followers affectionately call him Karao- glan after a 12th Century Turkish version of Robin liood,' more than held his own in the traditional conservative rural areas. Ecevit's party also outpolled Demirel in the ultra-rightist central province of Konya, home of the whirling dervishes, the mystic Islamic sect. A heavy voting turnout was reported Sunday throughout the Texas-sized nation. Ecevit's campaign for law- and-order, along with pledges to restore civil liberties in Turkey, were underscored during the campaign by flashes of left-right violence that left H dead and 221 injured. ' Poet-politician Ecevit also was the target of five assassination attempts. Should EcevH ivia. the vital question would be whether his party would take enough seats to form a strong majority government, and thus end a four-year coalition that has left the economy in shambles and complicated formulation of Turkish foreign policy. With unemployment now exceeding 13 per cent and annual inflation at 18 per cent, Turkey has neither the hard cash to pay her foreign debts nor the clout to claim the full membership in the European Common Market that might help put her back on her feet. But the biggest need for strong government lies in Turkey's stalemated foreign affairs. Turkey's feud with Greece over oil and air rights in the Aegean Sea has brought the two countries to the brink of war several limes over the past Iwo years. Their dispute over Cyprus continues lo boil -- undermining Turkey's traditionally good relations with the United Slates. Congress has refused to restore thai aid until Turkey and Greece make progress in Iheir currently deadlocked Cyprus negotiations.
