And for the last four years, Bud, as he lik«s lo be called, has been turning out. bird houses, squirrel shelters and dog houses with a regularity that may lead one ' lo believe his livlihood depended on it. "It does, really," said Hack er. "You know if I, don't keep myself busy with work like this I'd find myself just sitting around all my retirement." But Bud Hacker is not an ordinary retiree. A case of German measles that he contracted w h e r f h c was four years' old has forced him to Jead a life as both a worker'.and;as a reliree in a mariner'different t h a n the way most' men ..lead their lives. Bud Hacter'. : is blind. _ : "I first noticed my eyesight was failing iV nJ?dilt 20,yea'rs, ; ago when I was 1 ' working at Vfacto- ry near here," he said." With failing eyesight, Hacker had to lake extra precautions to make sure he did not injure himself on the drill press he opera fed. "But about 17 years ago ) had to quil (hat job," Hacker explained. "Some of my coworkers started playing tricks o n - m e . They wanted lo see me injure myself, I guess.". "I have only boon concerned about safety," he said. "You have lo be that way when your eyesight begins to.go. So I had lo quit my job.' The next four years, Hacker recalls, were spent . breeding flowers on a plot of land behind the house where he and his brother, Edward," have lived all t l i e i r lives. B o t h men confess to being "over sixty" now. When the loss of sight be- cnme so pronounced he could IK) longer sec the flowers, Hacker says he gave up and became a brooding recluse. "I felt sorry for myself, I just couldn't help it," said Hacker. Four years ago, he slartcd m a k i n g use of (lie garage cqiiippsd with almost any k i n d of tool the average handyman would want from a rndial saw lo an assortment of hammers, pliers and plywood. "I don't sell most of what I make," said Hacker. "Most ol it I g i v o away. I f i g u r e if someone will use what I make lo shelter some animals, I'm gelling a l l the satisfaction I need out of just m a k i n g the shelter." The bird houses, Hacker's specially, range from the variety small enough to h a n g on a tree limb lo elaborate motel- l i k e complexes. I lacker says he has only one my Fiddle Around?
