Ivcrson, Willislon, Sat., May 23, 1970 GREELEY TRIBUNE Page 19 Developers of SST Say Project Misrepresented misrepresented. William M. Magrnder, new director of SST development for the Department of Transportation, told his first news conference that a major problem is unfair criticism. Magruder said half-truths can destroy the nation, and asked newsmen to expose and counter half-truths about the SST program. At the same time Magruder made public a letter from former astronaut William A. Anders, now executive secretary of the National Aeronautics andj Space Council, ! Magruder said he Is sure both Boeing and General Electric would meet the current estimates of cost through the construction of two prototypes for flight testing in 1973. Anders said the present SST design offers reductions of smoke and noise levels, as compared lo existing jet transports. "Much adverse publicity has been focused on the sideline noise issue," Anders said. He added that "considerable confusion on noise rules has also contributed to misunderstandings the part of the press and the public." Magruder said SST sales over a 10-year period would provide the United States with a $20-billion balance of payments. "We cannot afford to let that kind of money slip away," he jsaid.
