(Photo special to the Tribune by Skeets Calvin) ByRONTOLLEFSON Tribune SUft Writer Former Greeley State Sen. Hank Brown confirmed reports Thursday that he is looking at the Republican lieutenant governor candidacy in next year's general election. Brown, 37, Senate majority whip during 1975-76, served a single four-year term in that legislative chamber. He is a vice president of Monfort of Colorado. Brown said he has no plans yet for a formal candidacy announcement. But he added, "I am taking a look at this." With an already packed field among Republicans seeking the 1978 gubernatorial candidacy, Brown admitted he has received suggestions he try for the GOP governor spot. However he said his orientation is more toward a possible lieutenant governor candidacy outright, rather than trying for governor and perhaps later accepting a second spot on a GOP ticket. "The day when you run for one office and later take another is over, I think," said Brown. Although he served as the Senate's assistant floor leader with Senate Majority Leader Richard Flock of Denver, and is an admirer of Plock, Brown said any candidacy of his would not be tied to any particular GOP candidate for governor. ' That field reportedly stands at a potential dozen or more, including Plock, former Denver Sen. Joe Shoemaker, Westminster Sen. Ted Strickland, Lakewood Mayor James Richey, former Boulder Rep. Sandy Arnold and former Gov. John Vanderhoof. Brown said he has talked with a number of the obvious GOP candidates for governor, and believes any one of them would make better use of the once largely ceremonial post of lieutenant governor. "My hope is any of them would really use the position in their administrations," said Brown. Late last year, in reports cautiously confirmed then by Brown and 4th District Congressman James Johnson, Brown indicated he might look to a north-state congressional race, if Johnson chose a race for governor. Johnson said then he was considering a GOP race for the gubernatorial candidacy. But he added, 'Two years is a long way off.
