Big Brother-Big Sister Club Picks Essay Contest Winners Three _ young students of is important. School District Six were judged winners in the essay contest sponsored by the Big Brother- Big Sister Club. They wrote winning essays on what Greeley can do to improve within the next 100 years. This was part of the club's centennial celebration and was designed to involve the younger citizens of Greeley in the observance. All entries will be on display during the club's May festival, May 23, in Island Grove Park. The winners were Cheryl Meek, 11, a sixth grade student under Mrs. Orton at Madison School; Roger Archuleta, level four, Mrs. Boyer, Park School; and Teresa Yeager, fifth grade class of Mrs. Wyrough Cameron School. Their essays follow: How to Improve Greeley By Cheryl Meek Greeley has a bad pollution problem. Somehow, we've got to stop it. Right now, we've got to pay to get into the city dump to dump our trash. Some people have lots of trash but don't have the mcciey lo pay to dump it. You also have to pay to have a garbage company take it away. Trash just keeps building up! People can't keep paying forever just to dump Ihoir rubbish. Someone should invent materials that melt disintegrate under certain pressure, heat or other conditions. You'd think Fort Knox could hand over enough money to pay for problems like this. After all, it Greeley needs more schools for a growing population. Brentwood students are sent to Maplewood and Madison. Scott students are being sent to Maplewood also. You don't know who's from where. Greeley is just growing too fast. Greeley also has a drug problem, although it isn't terribly bad. In years to come it might get worse. In my opinion, Greeley should have a stiffer fine connected with drugs. The Police Department should give lectures films, meetings, etc. with schools and other social going-ons. What Greelty Can Do To Improve in the Next 100 Years By Roger Archulet* Greeley can improve the community in the next 100 years by better sanitation. Housing for the p o o r people. Better recreation facilities for the children. Keeping peoples yards clean, and rivers and parks. Keeping your cars in good condition in order to improve our air pollution. And improve our relationship among one another. Greeley Can Improve In 100 Years By Teresa Yeagtr How can Greeley improve This is how! We need bigger and better schools. We need grass playgrounds. Several children gel hurt each week on gravel playgrounds. We need beeter books bathrooms, lunchrooms anc teachers. We could cut down on pollu- ion by building more electric cars. What can we do about our sewage? It stinks! We need some method to keep the smell down. We need more and better parks. Every day young kids from 6 lo 15 are taking drugs. If we were to build activity houses maybe we could gel them interested in creative activities. I have one more idea and 1 man. This is how I think Greeley can improve. It may cost time and money but isn't our city worth it? CHIROPRACTIC Relieves pain -- without druKS. Restores health, without needless surgery.
