TV's "Telephone Hour," which won its way into prime time this fall with its new musical documentary format, is aiming for the same elite audience despite its new high-pressure broadcast slot, "We are after those people whose combined efforts produce the intellectual climate in which we want to function and grow," said a spokesman for the sponsor, the American Telephone Telegraph Co. "We want their good will- including that of the campus community," added the company's assistant vice presidentfor advertising, L.

K. O'Leary. Starting Ihis September, the "Telephone Hour" will be seen on Friday nights, at 10 p.m. EOT. This is probably the least enviable of all prime time hours, yet it is an undeniable triumph to have landed it.

The musical documentaries will alternate with other NBC-TV news and public affairs programs. In the past season, the "Telephone Hour" was seen on Sunday evenings, at p.m. EOT. This wasn't too awful an hour in itself, but the early slot meant that in some other time zones it was aired virtually back into the late afternoons. Combined with this schedule-and the good chance that viewers might be otherwise occupied early Sunday evenings --were the intrusions of sports events like football games.

At any rate, between the schedule, the pre-emptions and the new format, it is reported that the series lost about a million viewers from the time it dropped its old style of presentation, which has been described as "music to offend everybody by." The new format, however, did draw a great deal of attention to the "Telephone Hour," which had been depressingly dull in its old style. In addition, critical praise poured in. The sponsor was pleased at finally being considered "with it" and contemporary in its musical offerings. But, although it has shown Jittle regard for the big ratings game, a spokesman makes clear it is definitely trying to achieve maximum viewing from its potential audience, which he estimates at about 13 million persons. To this end, it will continue experimenting with its manner of presentation.

For example, there will not be such all-out reliance on the "Cinema Verile" technique, although there will certainly still be some of it. The company feels it did well its first year of experimentation --and it was successful--but admits there were the inevitable errors bound to arise in doing 16 programs. As an instance, the Van Cliburn show is described as "press agentry" and "amistake." This season, says the spokes- TV PROFILE man, film techniques will be used according to the subjects involved. In addition, the "Telephone Hour" was sensitive to criticism that there were loo many bits and pieces of musical performances on some programs--and will try to offer longer segments of these passages. There will, however, be one definite carryover f'om the past season: the hours again will not be interrupted by commercials, with all adssaved for the end.

I believe that in a situation such as this, a man owes it to his family to kick up his heels a bit. Sow a few wild oats. Get it all out of his system, so to speak. For about a week i set a mad pace, going out to movies or baseball games almost every evening. Finally a friend brought me to my senses.

"You've got to get a grip on yourself," he warned. "Otherwise you'll keep sinking lower into debauchery until eventually you'll be sneaking around letting air out of tires and stuff like that." I realized then that I was OR the brink of perdition, being by nature hot-blooded and given to wild impulses, i had let my baser sell get out of hand. For the next couple of evenings I stayed at home and watered Ihe geraniums. I was the picture of middle age, middle class, suburban, head-of- the-family, PTA-going respectability. Then one night the moon turned red and I found myself out of control again.

I don't know yet what came over me but I was suddenly seized by an overpowering desire to become a vegetarian. Something like that is impossible to analyze. Man and boy, I suppose I have eaten more different kinds of animal flesh than almost any man or boy you might mention. I have eaten roast elephant and hippo, fried rattlesnake broiled seal flippers, among other things. What is more, 1 enjoyed them all.

So obviously I was not rebelling against meat. Probably the best guess is that I was rebelling against middle age, middle class, suburban, head-of-the-f a i 1 PTA-going respectability. Anyway, my friends and neighbors were siiutkeci beyond V- 1 measure by my plunge into vegetarianism. Friends and neighbors mil forgive you if you quit smoking, although they may keep changing the subject. They will even forgive you if you quit drinking, although they may not ask you to any more parties.

But I soon found that if you quit eating meat, you are beyond exculpation. In a subsequent dispatch, I shall examine my fall more fully. Meanwhile, please pass the peas.
