Thurs., May 26, 1977 CBEF.1.EY (Colo.) TRIBUNE A-5 Some 'Do's' for do-it-yourselfers Thouuncb cf cir owner* Jdn the ranks of do-it-yourselfers every day, and the trend ii expected to continue, according to Julian C. Morris, executive vice president, Automotive Parti and Accessories AuodaUon (APAA). HUM new "doen," ai APAA calls them, should not expect to be able to perform even the simplest task as quickly as more-experienced car main- talnen. Here are suggestions from APAA aimed at reducing the time spent by inexperienced doers. 1. Before you start, take the time to took the task over. 2. Scrape away" any accumulation of graue or dirt that conceals the outlines of those components you will be working around or have to remove. 3. Note which items you may merely have to loosen to get to those other pieces that will require removal. 4. Identify the differences In the site and location of each .bolt that will require removal. 5. Now, if you have really good memory for these mental pictures, you can start the operation, putting each piece as you remove it In a suitable container, a large can or box so they do not get scattered or lost Or, make a simple sketch of the project, noting the she, lengths, positions and order of removal for each nut, bolt, spacer, etc., as you remove them. e. Another method that works very weD is to draw an outline of the part being removed on a piece of substantial cardboard. Then punch a hole in the appropriate place in the outline where each bolt is removed and Insert the bolt and washer into the hole as they are removed. To hold nuts and washers In the poflltion from which they are removed, poke a nail in the outline and set them over the nail. Items not lending themselves to either of these methods can be secured with a piece of masking tape, or noted with a list or drawing of the item in its proper place and position. If you need toidentify another angle from which pieces are removed, you can score and fold the cardboard accordingly to signify the different positions in which the pieces are reinstalled. Now carefully set the board with the positioned pieces in a safe place so that nobody will inadvertently knock everything "galley west" in moving the job around! There are several advantages to Method t. First, you do not have to rely on your memory, if you must leave the job for any period of time, to know bow many pieces you have to reassemble, what goes where and In which order. The method also saves the time wasted trying to put a too- long bolt into a too-shallow hole, using too short a bolt in a position requiring a longer one, installing a component ahead of time and having to remove it again to put something else on mat needed installation ahead of it, hunting for a spacer, washer or whatever and getting so disturbed that you can't think straight. Finally, you avoid the danger of "finishing" the job with pieces left over!
