SHELER GRAND RAPIDS. Mich. (UPI) One December night, in 1975, 11-year-old Johnny' Dieckman left his bed, walked! down the dark hallway to the' bathroom, collapsed and died. Doctors attributed the death to Reyes Syndrome, an often fatal liver ailment whose most frequent victims are children recovering from viral infections. Johnny's parents, Mr.

and Mrs. John Dieckman of Benzonia, had never heard of Reyes Syndrome. They were appalled to find their doctors knew little about the disease. A few months later, Dieckman and three other families who had suffered similar tragedies chartered the Reyes Syndrome Foundation, a nonprofit organization to promote research for the detection and treatment of the mysterious disease. "Most people don't know about Reyes Syndrome," said Dieckman, foundation president.

"It is very difficult for the layman the parent to detect. "It's basically a disease of the liver with encephalitis of the brain. The liver simply says, 'I'm going on vacation and I may not As a result, toxins get into the blood stream and go to the brain." Dieckman said the syndrome seems to set in three to five days after a child appears recovered from, some type of viral illness, such as influenza influenza chicken pox or a respiratory infection. 'The child starts to get lethargic and acts tired," Dieckman said. "Vomiting sets in, he becomes disoriented and may become violent.

Then he may go into a coma. If ne doesn't come out of the coma after 48 or 36 hours, he's in trouble." Treatment usually is limited to basic life support measures, Dieckman said. Exchange transfusions, cranial surgery to relieve pressure on the brain and total "saline washouts" ol the blood system have also been attempted. A team of doctors at the University of Michigan recently developed a more effective way of treating severe forms of the ailment by using special drugs to control brain pressure. The Reye's treatment team at the university's C.

S. Molt Children's Hospital reports the. survival rate has increased from 50 to 80 per cent in patients with moderately severe forms of the disease. Dieckman said statistics compiled by the National Center for Disease Control show a higher incidence of reported cases of Reyes Syndrome in states bordering the Great Lakes. He said Michigan recorded 50 cases in both 1974 and 1975.

"Essentially nothing in 26 years has been done," Dieckman said. "To the best of our knowledge the only dollar amount spent by the federal government directly in re- search of Reyes Syndrome is $100,000 compared to millions for other diseases." Dieckman said the foundation is trying to attract federal funds into research at existing medical centers. A team of six medical advisers from children's hospitals throughout the country assist the foundation in applying for available grants. "We are not interested in amassing great wealth for the foundation or in creating a the disease and a program of giant bureaucracy or research biochemical research and center of our own," he said, epideraiological study. Song Contest Open To All Composers NEW YORK (UPI) A top prize of 55,000 will be awarded at the 12th annual Castlebar International Song Contest in County Mayo, Ireland, scheduled for October 3-8.

The event is open to composers throughout the world. Closing date for all entries is June llth; and 27 qualifiers for the finals will be announced July 16. Categories include best overall song; singer of the winning song; best interpretation of a song; songs written by composers from abroad; songs in the Irish language; and best instrumental numbers. Instead, coal treated with potassium flows into a com-. bustion chamber and bums at high temperatures. The expanding gas, ionized by potassium, is forced at the speed of a bullet down a pipe and through a magnetic field. That creates electricity, and conducting tubes pluck it from the flowing gas.

Then the steam flows into a conventional turbine.
