S 6 G R E E L E Y Colo.) TRIBUNE TTiurs.. May 2S. IS7T Tornadoes Restaurant now lifelong romance Report From America "It's worth waiting for, folks" By MILTON RirtlMAN NEW YORK (UPI) - When most young boys fall in love, generally it's with a girl. With Meade Alexander, it was different. He fell in love with a restaurant and it turned out to be a lifelong romance. His uncle first took him to Sweets Restaurant when he was 12 and he kept eating the seafood there for the next 81 years, coming in regularly at least once or twice a week. Since there are no reservations, he had to wait in line like everyone else, but that never bothered him. Meade Alexander, who made his living as a Wall Street' insurance broker, was a Tine figure of a man, lean, straight as a ramrod and always with good color in his face. He was especially fond of grey sole, the house specialty, and after he'd finish his meal and see the long line of other patrons stretching from the flight of steps to the street below, patiently waiting their turn, he'd tell them pleasantly, "It's worth waiting for, folks. I've been eating here more than 80 years, and look what it has done for me." Meade Alexander died earlier this year at 93 while dancing at a social function, but Sweets, which lays claim to being the oldest restaurant in New York City and one of the oldest in the country, keeps right on operating and will be celebrating its 135th anniversary this summer. Guiding genius of what has been called Manhattan's Oldest Kettle of Fish is Lea Lake, a tiny wisp of a woman with a perpetually cheerful disposition and a heart as big as a bathtub. And she isn't the least bit coy about her age, either. She tells anybody who asks she's 78 although she's so small and trim, barely five feet and 103 pounds, she looks at least 15 years younger. To Lea I,ake,.Sweets Restaurant is pretty much her whole life, and between her and partner, associate and good right arm Andrew Gerzel, the place is run like few other restaurants you've ever been Seafood lovers come from all parts of the world to eat at Sweets, first because they're guaranteed the fish is fresh and second because they like the unique way it's prepared. Mark Twain, Diamond Jim Brady and Lillian Russell, the great actress, were among Sweets' earliest customers. In the days before women smoked in public, Miss Russell shocked some of the other diners by lighting a cigarette in the restaurant and was asked either to put it out or leave. She put it out. "People always keep asking me for our 'secret' of cooking," says the 68-year-old Gerzel, who once was a community center athletic director and who is known as "Mr. G" in the restaurant. "I tell them all the same thing. Our only 'secret' is fresh fish, butter and just enough cooking. It's really no secret. "We have a natural advantage. We're right across the street from the Fulton Fish Market - the largest seafood distributors in the world. We get the top of the catch, we never serve anything frozen and most of the people who sell us our fish come into our place to eat." Only two families have ever owned the restaurant, the Sweet family and the Lake family. "My father, James, first came here as a water boy -now they call them bus boys -the day after the big blizzard in 1888," says Lea Lake. "He worked himself up to manager and then bought the restaurant from Ed Sweet, whose father was the original owner, in 1920. The first day I came to the restaurant here I was only six years old." Sweets has 35 employes, including Lea Lake's 80-year- old sister, Queenie McFarland, who does the billing. Everyone who works in the place, from Ashley Turnbull, the head chef, to Alfred Elliott, the night porter, considers himself part of the family. roam heartland states By United Pr«s lnt«n»tloa»l Thunderstorms roamed the Plains states Wednesday, producing 13 tornadoes.
