tcuens 5afnt Monday, March 31, 1980 JJaily nurnal Page 15 I I'- BREAKING THE TAPE Rick Redding of Pacelli crosses the finish line to win the Cardinals' heat in the 4-lap relay at the Pacelli Invitational. Pacelli, however, finished second to Wausau Newman in that event, as well as the meet. Redding later set a meet record of 54.7 in winning the 440. (Staff photo by Steve Leahy) STRETCHING Pacelli's Mike Koehl stretches out for every inch he can get competition at the Pacelli Invitational. Koehl placed third in top jump of 19-6V2.

"He had a two-foot improvement in the shot put this meet and will get better with more practice. "Tom Hartzheim has shown consistent improvement in both the high jump and the long jump while Mike Koehl has also gotten better in the long jump, so we're stronger in that event. "Rick Redding has really started the season running strong. He had a good week of practice but suffered a minor hamstring pull after winning the 440.

That kept him out of the sprint medley. "We need to work on getting our people in the short sprints ready for the conference meet, build some depth in the quarter mile and work on technique in TEAM SCORES Wausau Newman 100, Pacelli 83, Manawa 64, Waupaca 631, DeForest 51 Colby 32, Marion 22, Wisconsin Rapids Assumption 18, Westfield 16, Neillsville 15. 50 yd. dash 1. John Pavelski added a second place in the shot put' (45-llVfe) and Hartzheim a second in the long jump (19-lOVfe). A pair of record-setting performances paced Newman's victory as Paul Bauman won the shot with a meet record toss of 49 feet, nine inches and Joe Waldvogel won the two mile run in a record 10:23.6. Bauman's toss broke the record of 49-5 set by Jim Warzinik of Pacelli in 1976 while By JIM KRUEGER Staff Correspondent First place finishes in three of the final four running events enabled Wausau Newman High School's track team to take command and win the 6th annual Pacelli Invitational Saturday afternoon at the SPASH Fieldhouse. Newman won the meet with 100 points while defending champion Pacelli was second with 83 points. Manawa was a distant third with 64 points followed by Waupaca with 63, DeForest with Site, Colby with 32, Marion with 22, Wisconsin Rapids Assumption with 18, Westfield with 16 and Neillsville with 15.

Pacelli and Newman were tied, 54-54, with six running events left but Newman broke the deadlock by outscoring the Cards 14-5 in the 50 yard low hurdles and the 880 yard run. Newman then iced the victory by taking consecutive firsts in the one lap dash, two mile run and sprint medley. Newman had an edge over Pacelli in first place finishes, 5-3, and also had more seconds, 4-3, and thirds, 3-2. Thus, all of Newman's 100 points came from finishes in the top three places. Pacelli Coach Mike Hoffman was pleased with his team's effort, considering that Newman had defeated Pacelli earlier in the season, 60-40.

"We've shown considerable improvement since we last ran against them," he said. "As a group we now feel we can compete with Newman as a conference contender. "We missed some key individuals today Neal Lindquist, who wasn't here because of a death in the family, and Jini Rogers, who didn't suit up. In the junior varsity meet, Pacelli won the team title with 115 points while Manawa was a remote second with 47, followed by DeForest with 42, Colby with 38, Neillsville with 30, Newman with 28, Assumption with 26, Marion with 22, Waupaca with 13 and Westfield with 10. Pacelli had six first place finishes: Ben Palaganas in the 50 yard dash (6.1) and one lap dash (17.9), John Loomans in the low hurdles (7.0), Chris Polum in the pole vault (10-6), and the four lap relay (1:11.35) and mile relay (4:09.79) teams. Dan Bodette Waldvogel topped the mark of 10:26.2 set by' Tim Wirtz of Assumption in 1979. The only other record set was by Rick Redding of Pacelli in the 440 yard dash.

Redding took first in a record time of 54.7 seconds, just barely eclipsing the mark of 54.8 set by Will Anderson of Pacelli in 1977. For his effort, Bauman was selected as the most valuable performer in the field events while Brad Arndt of DeForest was named most valuable performer in the running events. Arndt won the mile (4:46.6) and 880 yard run (2:11.7) and was one of two double winners. The other double winner was Dan Buschke of Manawa, who won the 50 yard high hurdles (6.88) and 50 yard low hurdles (6.55). Hoffman cited a number of Cards who have been showing improvement as of late.

Pointers host MSOE in Tuesday twinbill Confined indoors since returning from a spring trip to Louisiana about a week ago, UW-Stevens Point's baseball team nonetheless hopes to open the regular portion of its regular season as scheduled here Tuesday. "Barring a sudden change in the weather, it looks like we'll be able to play Tuesday," Pointer coach Ken Kluck reported.

"The big thing is if we're able to drag the infield." UW-SP's opening foe is no stranger. Milwaukee School of Engineering was the opening foe for the Pointers a year ago in the NAIA District 14 playoffs at Goodland Field in Appleton. The Pointers took a 10-3 decision on that meeting but Kulick expects strong competition from the Engineers. "The last I heard, they had a 5-2 record on a spring trip south and they have quite a few guys back from last year's strong club," he said. The non-conference twinbill is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

on the UWSP diamond. Kulick said he plans to divide the two games among his top four pitchers Jack Zurawik, Jeff Seeger, Pat Pavelski and Frank Stockus. All pitched well on the recent spring trip where the Pointers posted a 3-2 record, losing another seven games to 'the weatherman. The rest of the Pointer lineup Tuesday will include Scott Fisher in left field, Randy Schmitgen in center, John Suchon in right, Dan Wilcox at first base, Kevin WyngaaVd at second, Rick Thomas at shortstop, John Fillipan at third and Scott Kugi as designated hitter. John Funs and Mike LaBarbera will divide the catching duties.

Following Tuesday's outing, the Pointers will be idle until Sunday, April 13, when they travel to Winona, Minn, for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against St. Mary's College. won the event at 2:12.2 while Ellis was clocked in 2 13.4. "Jeff Ellis really did the job for us in the walk and the 1,000 yard run," Witt said.

"I really feel that he would have won the 1,000 if he had been fresh and not had to compete in the walk earlier in the day." Also finishing second for the Pointers were Eric Parker and Dan Bodette. Parker narrowly missed out on the gold in the 600 yard run as he had a second place time of 1:15.0, while John Kruchoski of Whitewater came across at 1 14.6 to win the event. Bodette was also nipped at the wire as his runnerup time of 1 59.0 was bested by Copperud's time of 1:58.5. "Parker and Bodette really ran hard. I am really pleased with them," Witt remarked.

After setting a WSUC record of 24.8 seconds in the 220 intermediate hurdles preliminaries on Friday, UW-SP's Al Sapa was forced to settle for third in the finals with a time of 25.0. Whitewater's Jerry Young won the event with a time of 24.9. Andy Shumway also finished with a third, his coming in the long jump where he had a best effort of The only other UW-SP third was registered by the 880 yard relay team of Sapa, Mike Gaab, Barry Martzahl and Dave Lutkus, which had a time of 1:33.4. Finishing fourth for Point were Kirk Morrow, shot put, and the mile relay squad of Sapa, Martzahl, Dave Soddy and Parker, 3: 28.9. Martzahl also contributed a fifth place finish in the 440 yard dash with his time of 52.4, as did Lutkus in the 300 dash at 33.1.

Adding place points were Bob Burton, long jump, Dennis Kotcon, mile run, Steve Brilowski, 880 yard run, and Bill Kalafat, triple jump, "Our three long jumpers also did an excellent job, as two placed (Shumway and Burton) while Gale Oxley was seventh with a nice jump of said Witt. "All in all, I am pleased with our meet. I know the kids are already looking forward to when we host the outdoor meet." Al Copperud and Bill Patza each won a pair of events to lead defending champion UW-L to its fifth title in the last six years. Copperud won the 1,000 yard run at 2:12.2 and the 880 yard run at 1:58.5. Patza, who had set a long jump record Friday, won the triple jump in a recording-tying distance of 48-Wz.

Teammate Reggie Rabb won the 60 yard dash at 6.5. John Kruchoski of Whitewater finished first in the 600 yard run at 1:14.6 and also anchored the winning 880 yard and mile relay teams. The 880 team set a new record of 1 131 .3, while the mile team finished in 3:25.3. Jerry Young of Whitewater tied his 60 yard high hurdle mark of 7.6 and won the 220 yard intermediate hurdles at 24.9. Reggie French of Oshkosh earned titles in the 440 yard dash at 49.8 and the 300 yard dash at 32.1.

Chris Iselin of Stout set a new mark of 6-11 in the high jump, while Jim Speigelberg of Eau OSHKOSH "We placed in all of the events that we felt we had to but ended up with fourths and fifths instead of firsts and seconds," UW-Stevens Point men's track coach Rick Witt said after his team finished fourth in the Wisconsin State University Conference Indoor Meet here this weekend. UW-La Crosse won the meet as expected with 156Ms points to outdistance runnerup UW-Whitewater's 115 points. Following in order were, UW-Oshkosh, 87; UW-SP, 77; UW-Eau Claire, 57; UW-Stout, 29; UW-Plattevilie, 18; UW-River Falls, 13; and UW-Superior, 9. While Witt had hoped for a higher finish, he could not fault the performance of his team. "I am disappointed that we finished in fourth place, but I am not at all disappointed with the efforts and performances of our young men," Witt declared.

"If we were a little more experienced, our younger kids would have been tougher mentally and possibly could have turned a fourth into a second or third." A total of nine conference records were broken in the two-day meet, one of which was by the Pointers' Jeff Ellis. Ellis was an easy winner in the two mile walk, as his time of 13:49.0 was 52 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. His time also shattered the WSUC record of 14:20.2 which was held by Jeff Mazanec of UW-Platteville. Ellis came within a hair of being a double winner as he also finished second in the 1,000 yard run.
