Saturday, August 29, 1987 Skull stolen from Minahan crypt in Allouez GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) Police were searching for the skull Titanic victim Dr. William E. Minahan after his mausoleum and crypt at Woodlawn Cemetery in Allouez were desecrated. Brown County Sheriff Leon Pieschek said the theft of the skull was discovered when a cemetery official reported Friday that the mausoleum had been vandalized and the crypt entered.

Brown County Coroner Genie Williams said she took the rest of Minahan's remains into custody for safekeeping and will examine them later to make sure only the skull is missing. "Other cities in Wisconsin have had problems like this with grave robbing," said Williams. "It is on the upswing because cultism is on the upswing. They use them (remains such as skulls) for rituals." Pieschek said it was possible 1 the skull theft was cult-related, but added, "We haven't seen much of that around here." "It also could be just a weird vandalism case where kids are involved," said Sgt. Kenneth Bougie, a Sheriff's Department investigator.

Minahan, a member of one of Green Bay's most prominent families, was one of about 1,500 people who died when the luxury ocean liner Titanic sank on April 14, 1912 in the Atlantic Ocean. Minahan's body was one of only about 200 recovered. Minahan's wife and his sister were among the 704 survivors of the tragedy. The sinking has received publicity recently because artifacts 1 that are being recovered from the vessel. Pieschek and Bougie said they had some leads in the case.

However, the motive for the vandalism and theft were still not known for sure, they said. "We're working on something. We think we know why," Pieschek said, referring to the theft. He declined to elaborate for fear of ruining the investigation. Bougie said that some time Thursday night a vandal or vandals pushed in the metal doors of the mausoleum which is located on a bluff and carries the name Minahan above the doors.

Inside the mausoleum, there are two crypts the one nearest the floor contained Minahan's remains and one above it which was never used, Bougie said. The marble faces on both crypts were shattered. Someone apparently sat on the floor and kicked in the front of the wood and tin box sheathing on Minahan's coffin, Bougie said. The front of the coffin was then torn off and someone reached in and took the skull, he said. "The rest of the skeleton was not disturbed," he said.

Bougie said tennis shoe prints were found at the scene. While not discounting any possible motives, Pieschek said he did not think the theft was related to recent publicity a about the remains and artifacts from the Titanic. "I don't think many people knew about that," said Pieschek, referring to how Minahan died. The fact that only the skull was taken and the rest of the skeleton was not disturbed shows vandals did not try to rummage through the coffin and probably were not looking for valuables, Bougie said. Minahan was a resident of Fond du Lac but his body was brought to Green Bay for burial with those of his parents.

The mausoleum was built later by his widow, who died in 1919 at the age of 40. Minahan, who was 45 at the time of his death, was the brother of the late Dr. Robert E. Minahan, Dr. John.
