Saturday, August 29, 1987 Stevens Point (Wis.) Journal Skull stolen from Minahan crypt in Allouez think we know why," Pieschek said, referring to the theft. He declined to elaborate for fear of ruining the investigation. Bougie said that some time Thursday night a vandal or vandals pushed in the metal doors of the mausoleum which is located on a bluff and carries the name Minahan above the doors. Inside the mausoleum, there are two crypts the one nearest the floor contained Minahan's remains and one above it which was never used, Bougie said. The marble faces on both crypts were shattered.

Someone apparently sat on the floor and kicked in the front of the wood and tin box sheathing on Minahan's coffin, Bougie said. The front of the coffin was then torn off and someone reached in and took the skull, he said. "The rest of the skeleton was not disturbed," he said. Bougie said tennis shoe prints were found at the scene. While not discounting any possible motives, Pieschek said he did not think the theft was related to recent publicity about the, remains and artifacts from the Titanic.

"I don't think many people knew about that," said Pieschek, referring to how Minahan died. The fact that only the skull was taken and the rest of the skeleton was not disturbed shows vandals did not try to rummage through the coffin and probably were not looking for valuables, Bougie said. Minahan was a resident of Fond du Lac but his body was brought to Green Bay for burial with those of his parents. The mausoleum was built later by his widow, who died in 1919 at the age of 40. Minahan, who was 45 at the time of his death, was the brother of the late Dr.

Robert E. Minahan, Dr. John. R. Minahan, attorney Hugh Minahan and newspaper editor V.I.

Minahan, all of Green Bay. GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) Police were searching for the skull of Titanic victim Dr. William E. Minahan after his mausoleum and crypt at Wood-lawn Cemetery in Allouez were desecrated.

Brown County Sheriff Leon Pieschek said the theft of the skull was discovered when a cemetery official reported Friday that the mausoleum had been vandalized and the crypt entered. Brown County Coroner Genie Williams said she took the rest of Mina-han's remains into custody for safekeeping and will examine them later to make sure only the skull is missing. "Other cities in Wisconsin have had problems like this with grave robbing," said Williams. "It is on the upswing because cultism is on the upswing. They use them (remains such as skulls) for rituals." Pieschek said it was possible the skull theft was cult-related, but added, "We haven't seen much of that around here." "It also could be just a weird vandalism case where kids are involved," said Sgt.

Kenneth Bougie, a Sheriff's Department investigator. Minahan, a member of one of Green Bay's most prominent families, was one of about 1,500 people who died when the luxury ocean liner Titanic sank on April 14, 1912 in the Atlantic Ocean. Minahan's body was one of only about 200 recovered. Minahan's wife and his sister were among the 704 survivors of the tragedy. The sinking has received publicity recently because artifacts that are being recovered from the vessel.

Pieschek and- Bougie said they had some leads in the case. However, the motive for the vandalism and theft were still not known for sure, they said. "We're working on something. (AP) The current resident of the Governor's Mansion says he has no desire to leave Madison, but a former governor said he might pursue a move to Washington to fill the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by William Proxmire. Gov. Tommy G. Thompson said Friday he had worked too hard to win the governorship last fall to give it up for a Senate seat.

Besides, Thompson said, "when you compare living in Madison with living in Washington, D.C., you don't have to be too bright to decide where you'd rather live." But Democrat Anthony S. Earl, who was defeated by Thompson in last year's election, said he might enter the race. "I will be giving serious consideration to the possibility of running in the weeks ahead," Earl said in a statement issued at his law office across the street from the Capitol. Thompson and Earl were among a number of politicians whose names were being mentioned for the Senate only 24 hours after Proxmire, 71, announced he would not seek re-election because he believed he was too old for another six-year term. Heated races in both Democratic and Republican primaries were predicted by challengers hoping to succeed Proxmire, who has held the seat for 30 years.

Two congressmen, Democrat David S1 so gressman run for the Senate. "I have no interest in running for the 9th Congressional District seat," she said. "I have only one decision to make: Whether to seek Proxmire's seat. I am seriously weighing that, and will make an announcement when I have come to a decision." A legislative colleague, meanwhile, began beating the drum for support for Engeleiter. Rep.

Margaret Lewis, R-Jefferson, said Wisconsin voters will have a chance to elect Ms. Engeleiter as the first woman member of Congress from Wisconsin. Ms. Lewis said only one woman in the history of the United States, Sen. Nancy Kassebaum, has been elected to the United States Senate "without being preceded in Congress by her husband." "The prospects of another woman in the U.S.

Senate, especially a woman with (Engeleiter's) skills, is a real plus for the Republicans of Wisconsin," she said. Feingold, a member of the state Senate since 1982, said that, with the exception of Earl, he had as much experience in legislating as other Democrats being mentioned for the U.S. Senate, and was looking into the possi-. bility of making a run. James Sensenbrenner, and state Sens. Susan Engeleiter, R-Brookfield, and Russell Feingold, D-Middleton, hinted they were considering U.S. Senate bids. who represents northern Wisconsin's 7th District, said he was seriously considering a Senate race. But he said he would not oppose Earl, a longtime political ally.

"Obviously, there's a lot to weigh because I would be giving up 20 years' seniority to start over in the Senate, but I certainly don't want to see us (Democrats) lose that seat," said Obey, a member of Congress since 1969. Sensenbrenner, who represents the Milwaukee-area 9th District, told reporters in Madison he would be checking with potential contributors to see if he could raise the funds to mount a winning campaign. He said he would not run if Thompson got in the race, but understood that the governor planned to stay out. "I am not going to run against Tommy Thompson," Sensenbrenner said. "He has said he will not run, and I take Tommy at face value," the congressman added.

Sensenbrenner said Rep. Jim Moody, who has been actively seeking support for a possible Senate race, would probably be among the more formidable Democratic candidates. Ms. Engeleiter, who is GOP minority leader in the state Senate, issued a statement ruling out a possible run for Sensenbrenner's seat should the con- Bill would make offenders pay 24 HOUR FOOD CENTER 3256 CHURCH STREET message to the criminal element that you may have to pay for the fee given to the person who snitches on you," said Sgt Douglas Groth of the La Crosse Police Community Services Division. "It is also a strong message that society will not accept their behavior." The La Crosse Police Department is one of many that have Crime Stoppers programs, which are privately funded through donations and solicit information from callers who may remain anonymous.

"This would give a shot in the arm to any Crime Stoppers program," Groth said of Medinger's proposal. "We are not making money, but recouping our costs." LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) A lawmaker wants to show that crime doesn't pay by forcing offenders to reimburse law enforcement agencies the cost of reward money. State Rep. John Medinger, D-La Crosse, has introduced a bill that would allow judges, as a condition of probation, to charge criminals the amount of the reward paid for the tip leading to their arrest.

"It's poetic justice and it's real justice," Medinger said. "I think it's the kind of bill that will fly through the Legislature with no problem." The La Crosse Police Department requested the legislation. "I think this (bill) sends a strong Fill Tli I IrfTl MW) IT? a MAUTZ LABOR DAY W.
