6 CREELEY (Colo.) TRIBUNE April 27.1977 Kenton Kuhn takes office July 1 Newest UNC Trustee will work at student-trustee communication By imi'G SKIPPER I'NT News Service Intern The newesi University of Northern Colorado Trustee said he plans to work with students to improve student- trustee communication at the university. Kenton Kuhn begins his term officially July 1. He will try to "increase student awareness of what Ihe board does, and how it operates." "Very few students on campus know there is a board of trustees or what it does. My major goal is to inform them," he said. Kuhn.

a senior political science major, said he hopes to work closely with UNC's Associated Students A Congress. The new trustee said this will enable him to recognize student needs and receive support in trustee matters from congress members. One way, he said, to im- prove communication would be to inform students of academic policy decisions. For example, Kuhn suggested, proposed faculty position changes could be printed in a university publication, and students would have a chance to respond before the Trustees voted on the changes. Although his trustee position as a student representative is a nonvoting one, "I think I can be fairly influential if I do my research and my homework.

The votes are either for a against you before an issue comes to the floor," Kuhn said. "I think I'll get along on the board, but I won't roll over and play dead," he said. In fact, Kuhn actively campaigned for a student- trustee vote even before his election. The new trustee is president of Ihe Colorado Student Coalition (CSCl, a lobbyist group on the state level made up of one student from each of the Colorado institutions of higher education. The coalition's major project Ihis year is the passage of House Bill 1439.

which would give the student-trustee a vote at board meetings. In addition to being a trustee and CSC president, Kuhn has served in several other student positions since his graduation from Greeley Central High School four years ago. He has also served as University Center Commission (UCC) Lecture Chairman, an administrative assistant to the vice president and president of L'CC, A.S. director of external affairs and homecoming chairman. Kuhn has also been a member of the Student Fee Allocation Committee, the Academic Policy Committee and the University Center Policy Board.

After his graduation, sometime next year, Kuhn said, he will pursue a master's degree in- educational administration. Kuhn said he would like to go to law school after that and enter politics, "in either a i i a i legislation." For now, Kuhn said, he is looking forward to his one- year term as a trustee. "I appreciate the opportunity. Being a trustee will give me a broader knowledge of how things work. I'm looking forward to it," he said.
