Walter Whittaker, father of John Whittaker. Corporal Whittaker was Second from the right in the rear row is another veteran of the 18th Wisconsin infantry, Henry Johnson.

Little is known about him except that he was a farmer in the Plover vicinity after the war. Next is a William or wounded twice during the Civil He served in the same company as his brother and was the next Bill White, another unidentifed man, then John McGown, a farmer who lived near Plover. Third from the right in the middle row is a man named Blais-dell, who came to Portage coun- war, once through the legs at the battle of Shiloh, and later, during the march through Georgia, at the battle of Allatoomah pass.

It shows members of Plover post 149, Grand Army of the Republic, as they looked to a photographer then. The picture was loaned to the Daily Journal by John Whittaker, 112 North Division street, whose father served as officer of the day for the post for more than 20 years. These are some of the Civil war veterans shown in the picture: Upper left, rear row, is Capt. James (Jim) Bremmer, early day settler in Portage county, who recruited two companies of infantry in 1861 for the Union army and commanded one of them.
