IN Cardinals almost had a By JIM KRUEGER Journal Sports Writer The 1980 season wasn't a particularly good one for the Pacelli High School football team but on the other hand, it could have been a lot worse. the previous two seasons (10-1 and 8-2) while The Cardinals' a 5-5 overall record re fell far short of Pacelli's 3-3 record in the Central Wisconsin Catholic Conference was good for third place. But Pacelli did shut out four of its opponents- -Portage, 29-0, Eau Claire Regis, 27-0, Wausau Newman, 55-0, and Wisconsin Rapids Assumption, 15-0. The Cards' other victory came over Lakeland Minocqua, 39-29. And in each of the Cards' five losses, Pacelli was no more than a touchdown behind at halftime.

Pacelli lost to Escanaba, 30-15, Chippewa Falls McDonell, 13-7, 1 La Crosse Aquinas, 27-14, Menomonie, 7-0, and Marshfield Columbus, 29-0. "You can't be satisfied with a 5-5 season," said Pacelli Coach Bob Raczek. "'The goal we strive for each year is to win every game. We didn't reach that but we did lose some tough games. "I think only two teams we lost to were better than we were- Escanaba and Columbus.

We were just as good as the other three except we made some mistakes which cost us victories. Overall, I'm pleased with what we accomplished. are many teams that would be happy with a 5-5 season. we started out, we lost some fine athletes from last year through graduation. During the course of the summer, we also lost two others through transfers.

So we didn't have a great abundance of talent in skilled areas but we came a long way. "The key was the development of our line areas. We were inexperienced there and we tried a lot of different personnel. We finally got things settled in the middle of the season and from then on, the guys played well together. That was a big reason why we had three shutouts in a row." Turnovers at inopportune times plagued the Cards all season.

Pacelli lost the ball 25 times to 23 for its opponents but in the Cards' five losses, Pacelli turned the ball over 19 times to just 10 for the opponents. "We had only one experienced guy back," said Raczek, referring to center Mike Bemowski. "It took a lot of hard work but these guys finally came around. Our pass blocking was pretty good most of the season. "We had over 1000 yards receiving and all of our receivers did a fine job.

None of them have great speed but they showed the ability to catch the ball in traffic. "Jim Rogers was our only back with any varsity experience and he had a fine season." Rogers led the team with 755 yards rushing and also led the team in scoring with 84 points. "Jon Brilowski came into his own in the last three games," said Raczek, "as he had 270 yards. I look for him to continue that next year. "Jeff Soderberg at quarterback played hurt most of the year (wrist injury) and that hampered him.

But he had a good year as he completed 45 percent of his passes for 903 yards. The biggest problem he had was 11 interceptions. That's something he'll have to work on." Raczek was pleased with the way his team was able to move the ball but said his biggest disappointment was in the Cards' inability to score from in close. 1980 final Pacelli (Record 5-5) SCORES Pacelli 27 Portage 39 Lakeland 15 Escanaba 30 McDonell 14 Aquinas Regis 55 Newman 15 Assump. 0 Menomonie 0 Columbus 199 135 Pacelli Opp.

In effect, Bird missed. The ball took a bounce and fell through the basket. The Bucks then held on for a tional Basketball Association victory Friday night, boosting their record to 12-3.

"That's the type of night it was one in which you try to miss intentionally and can't do it," said Boston Coach Bill Fitch, who was ejected by referee Wally Rooney on two technical fouls in the third period. The Bucks, who had a 10- game winning streak snapped by Detroit Tuesday night, built a 16-point lead in the second period before settling for a 56-50 advantage at halftime. The Celtics roared back in the third period to forge in front and then lead by as much as six points, 85-79, four minutes into the final quarter.

However, the Bucks battled back as Junior Bridgeman scored 12 points and then pulled out the victory on two free throws by Bob Lanier, one by Marques Johnson and two by Quinn Buckner in the final 61 seconds. "I thought we played well down the stretch," Milwaukee Coach Don Nelson said. "We kept our composure. They were jamming the inside on us, so we had to shoot from outside and they started falling for us. "No, I don't like to beat my old team.

I just enjoy beating them because they're a good team and we're a good team. Sometimes luck plays an important part in this game." After Bird's two free throws, the Celtics had one final shot when the Bucks threw the ball away on a pass-in. Boston moved the ball to Eric Fersten, who shot from the baseline as he was whacked by Lanier at the final buzzer. "Yes, I thought our man was fouled, but there's nothing you can do about it," said Boston assistant coach K.C. Jones, who called the shots from the bench after Fitch was ejected.
