PACE 19 HOT WEATHER. HOT PUTTERS Tvo loWgsfootfs Head at Cleveland CLEVELAND, Ohio (UPI) Gary Player, who always is in contention, and two dark horses Bill Eggers and Bo Wininger, led the field by a stroke going into the second round of the $110,000 Cleveland Open golf tournament today with Jack Nicklaus and favored Arnold Palmer trailing by two and five strokes, respectively. The little South African, the. red-haired Eggers and the 40-year-old Wininger fired five-under par 66's all of them wielding hot putters in the first round Thursday to lead former PGA champion Lionel Hebert, Moon Mullins and Dave Hill by a shot. The golf was as hot as the heat which seared the Beechmont Country Club course as 42 players in the 150-man field broke par 35-36-71 and 27 equalled it.

BOGEYv ON THE NINTH UPSET HIM, PLAYER SAYS Player felt he would have shot a 31 going out except for bogeying the ninth hole. "I was putting the best I've ever putted and I really felt like I was going to have an exceptional round," he saidi "But then I three-putted from 20 feet on the ninth hole and wound up parring the 10th when I should have had a birdie. "That bogey on the ninth really upset me and I really never got going again." Player had five birdies and two bogeys on the front nine for a 32 and two birdies on the back for a 34. The 30-year-old Eggers, using a 19-year-old brassie given to him when he was a boy, overcame the putting jitters which used to bother him as he carded a 33-33 while Wininger, whose golfing luck has turned better after an African elephant safari last fall, had nines of 34 and 32. Their total of 66 put them two shots ahead of Nicklaus, Tony Lema, Mike Souchak, Sam Snead, Jim Ferrier, Gordon Jones, Chi Chi Rodriquez and Frank Beynton.

U.S. Open champion Julius Boros, Jacky Cupit, Art Wall, Bob Goalby, Jackie Burke and Doug Ford were among 11 tied at 69 while the 70 group included former U.S. champion Gene Littler, Canadian Stan Leonard, Billy Maxwell, Jay Hebert and Jim Ferree. While the trio of leaders putted superbly. Palmer couldn't get his putter going as he was bracketed with 26 others at even par 71.

"The whole answer," he said, "is I've got the putting jumps." FRIDAY. Luplow, Cleveland outfielder, made a spectacular diving catch of Dick Williams' bid for a three-run homer in the eighth inning and preserved a 6-4 triumph over third-place Boston Thursday.

Power, Minnesota first baseman, threw a punch at Detroit pitcher Phil Regan and was ejected from the game during a 10-6 triumph over the Tigers that moved the Twins to within three games of first-place New York. The Chicago White Sox downed the Yankees 6-0 as Ray Herbert pitched a five-hitter for his sixth shutout and second over New York while pulling the White Sox to within eight percentage points of the front-runners. Ed Brink-man singled home what turned out to be the decisive run in the sixth and Landrith added insur-fjice with his seventh inning homer.

Louisville Saturday and let's hope the Hoosiers can keep their string going at Freedom Hall. Indiana has won the last five at Louisville as have the Kentuckians at Indianapolis, so if things run true to form Coach Angus Nicoson's charges will win their 22nd game of the long series. However, they're going to have to be much sharper than last week when they suffered a 90-86 setback.

Stopping the' torrid shooting of Owensboro's Chuck Taylor will be Indiana's first target. He cornered 13 field goals in the opener, all from far away places, and nearly most goals were made as Hoosier defenders stood around and watched. Indiana's offense was adequate, at least during the last half, but its defense left something to be desired and no doubt Nicoson has been working on that problem this past week.
